Evaluation of Deceased Donor Kidney Transplantation in the Eurotransplant Senior Program in Comparison to Standard Allocation

Summary: Transplantation of kidneys from deceased donors aged >= 65 years to recipients of a similar age according to the Eurotransplant Senior Program (ESP) showed comparable graft survival and function, as well as similar rates of rejection and infectious complications, with infections being the main cause of death in both ESP and Eurotransplant kidney allocation system (ETKAS) patients. Age, the number of HLA mismatches, and the CMV serostatus with a seropositive donor and negative recipient were identified as the main risk factors for mortality.
