Estimating Three-Dimensional Carbon-To-Phosphorus Stoichiometry of Exported Marine Organic Matter

Eun Young Kwon et al.

Summary: The stoichiometric carbon to phosphorus ratios (rC:P) in suspended particulate organic matter (POM) are generally inversely correlated with surface phosphate (PO4) concentration. However, it is uncertain if previously suggested relationships between rC:P and PO4 are appropriate for the vertical export flux of organic matter.

Uncertain response of ocean biological carbon export in a changing world

Stephanie A. Henson et al.

Summary: This article discusses the transfer of organic carbon from the upper to the deep ocean, known as the "biological carbon pump," and emphasizes its importance for the global carbon cycle and marine ecosystems. However, there is disagreement among Earth system models regarding the projected response of global export flux to climate change, mainly due to the complexity of the biological carbon pump, making it challenging to observe and model. The article suggests prioritizing key processes and identifying necessary observations to improve the accuracy of models and reduce uncertainties in current and future estimates of carbon cycling in the ocean.

What Controls the Large-Scale Efficiency of Carbon Transfer Through the Ocean's Mesopelagic Zone? Insights From a New, Mechanistic Model (MSPACMAM)

Ashley Dinauer et al.

Summary: A new and cost-efficient model is proposed in this paper to simulate the penetration of sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) into the ocean interior. The model considers various factors such as particle size, density, dissolved oxygen, and seawater temperature, to explicitly represent the gravitational settling and removal/transformation processes. The model shows good agreement with observed POC flux attenuation in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, and reveals that high latitudes exhibit higher transfer efficiencies compared to low latitudes due to the abundance of large-sized, rapidly sinking particles and slower rate of remineralization.

The Fate of Oxygen in the Ocean and Its Sensitivity to Local Changes in Biological Production

Mark Holzer

Summary: By investigating the sensitivity of oxygen and its impact on biological production, it is possible to understand the control of water and biogenic particle transport on the sensitivity and fate of oxygen in the ocean. The specific relationships can be understood through the links between steady-state oxygen content and deficit with upstream and downstream oxygen utilization rates, with the impact on oxygen utilization rates mainly depending on the residence time of oxygen in the respective area.

Source-Labeled Anthropogenic Carbon Reveals a Large Shift of Preindustrial Carbon From the Ocean to the Atmosphere

Mark Holzer et al.

Summary: Two centuries of human carbon emissions have resulted in increased atmospheric CO2 and dissolved inorganic carbon in the ocean. However, only 45% of the atmospheric CO2 increase can be attributed to anthropogenic carbon emissions, with the rest being natural CO2 released from the ocean. This release is driven by the seawater's carbonate buffering capacity and occurs as the dissolved inorganic carbon concentration increases.

A New Metric of the Biological Carbon Pump: Number of Pump Passages and Its Control on Atmospheric pCO2

Mark Holzer et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed novel locally defined diagnostics to evaluate the efficiency of the ocean's biological pump and found that the key controls on atmospheric pCO(2) are the mean lifetime pump passages per DIC molecule and the aphotic sequestration time of regenerated DIC. Through idealized perturbations, it was discovered that fractional changes in pCO2atm are mainly influenced by changes in the number of soft-tissue pump passages.

Diffusion controls the ventilation of a Pacific Shadow Zone above abyssal overturning

Mark Holzer et al.

Summary: The study reveals a Pacific shadow zone (PSZ) with mean water ages exceeding 1400 years, primarily supplied by Antarctic and North Atlantic ventilated waters diffusing from below and from the south. Half of the PSZ waters re-surface in the Southern Ocean, a quarter in the subarctic Pacific. Despite strong overturning, the abyssal North Pacific also has mean re-surfacing times exceeding 1400 years due to diffusion into the overlying PSZ, suggesting that diffusive transports are a leading control on Pacific nutrient and carbon storage.
