Modeling the optical Cherenkov signals by cosmic ray extensive air showers directly observed from suborbital and orbital altitudes

A. L. Cummings et al.

Summary: Future experiments plan to use optical Cherenkov cameras at sub-orbital and orbital altitudes to observe extensive air showers produced by high-energy cosmic radiation interacting with the Earth's atmosphere. By looking above Earth's limb, these cameras can detect cosmic rays with energies ranging from less than a PeV to tens of EeV, with expected event rates larger than hundreds of events per hour of experimental live time, providing a promising test of the Cherenkov detection technique.

Indirect dark matter searches at ultrahigh energy neutrino detectors

Claire Guepin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that next-generation high-energy neutrino detectors such as POEMMA and GRAND have unique advantages for probing dark matter properties, improving sensitivity and comparing with existing constraints. Additionally, the uncertainties related to dark matter distribution in the galactic halo play an important role in the research outcomes.

Modeling of the tau and muon neutrino-induced optical Cherenkov signals from upward-moving extensive air showers

A. L. Cummings et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed modeling and computation methodology for determining optical Cherenkov signals produced by upward-moving extensive air showers induced by high-energy astrophysical neutrinos interacting in the Earth. By considering all possible tau-lepton decay and muon energy loss channels, along with the wavelength dependence of Cherenkov emission and its atmospheric attenuation, the research shows the large detection capability of space-based, high-energy cosmic neutrino detection. Specifically, for neutrino energies less than or similar to 10 PeV, the study finds that the upward-EAS sensitivity due to muon neutrino interactions in the Earth begins to dominate over that for tau neutrino interactions, extending the neutrino sensitivity to lower energies.
