Peptide-modulated pH Rhythms

Mengfei Liu et al.

Summary: Drugs can regulate the dynamics of periodic processes by interacting with proteins or oligopeptides. This study used a biomimetic biological clock to investigate the effect of pH-responsive peptides on rhythm dynamics, and found that the added peptides can modulate the oscillatory period. This discovery supports the idea that short peptide reagents may serve as drugs to regulate human body clocks.

Dissipative self-assembly of a dual-responsive block copolymer driven by a chemical oscillator

Xuewei Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that coupling stimuli-responsive building blocks with an oscillating reaction is an effective strategy for achieving dissipative self-assembly. By coupling a pH- and iodine-responsive block copolymer with the IO3--SO32--Fe(CN)62- (ISF) oscillator, the researchers realized the dissipative self-assembly of the building blocks and proposed a mechanistic model to simulate the kinetics of the oscillation.

pH Oscillator-Driven Jellyfish-like Hydrogel Actuator with Dissipative Synergy between Deformation and Fluorescence Color Change

Caixia Yang et al.

Summary: The development of soft actuators with complex practical functions is important for imitating the behaviors of living organisms. This article presents a method for fabricating artificial soft actuators with jellyfish-like synergistic deformation and fluorescence color change using AIE active hydrogels. The resulting jellyfish-inspired gel actuators exhibit autonomous behavior driven by a pH oscillator.

Application of a chemical clock in material design: chemically programmed synthesis of zeolitic imidazole framework-8

Norbert Nemet et al.

Summary: Here, a time-programmed and autonomous synthesis method for zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) using a methylene glycol-sulfite clock reaction was demonstrated. The induction period of the driving clock reaction, and hence the formation of ZIF-8, can be adjusted by the initial concentration of a reagent in the chemical clock. The autonomously synthesized ZIF-8 exhibited excellent morphology and crystallinity.

Reaction-diffusion hydrogels from urease enzyme particles for patterned coatings

Anthony Q. Mai et al.

Summary: Enzyme reaction networks can control the formation of hydrogels in spatial and temporal dimensions. By mimicking biofilm formation, urease-containing particles are used to induce the polymerization of thiol-acrylate, with properties adjusted by solution viscosity, particle dimensions, and spatial configuration. This method allows for the growth of enzyme-hydrogels with tunable properties for potential applications in biocatalytic flow reactors.

Self-Oscillating Membranes with Polymer Interface Synchronized with Chemical Oscillator to Reproduce Lifelike Pulsatile Flow

Marianne Benoit et al.

Summary: Self-oscillating filtration membranes with lifelike pulsatile flow are prepared by synchronously coupling a chemical oscillator with a responsive membrane. This coupling is achieved by superficially functionalizing commercial alumina membranes with pH-responsive poly(methacrylic acid) chains. The oscillations in pH during membrane filtration lead to synchronized changes in membrane pore size, resulting in chemically powered autonomous pulsatile flow.
