Paraspinal muscle characteristics on MRI in degenerative lumbar spine with normal bone density, osteopenia and osteoporosis: a case-control study

Gengyu Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences of paraspinal muscles between patients with normal bone density and those with osteopenia and osteoporosis. The results showed that patients with osteoporosis had lower BMI and higher fat infiltration in the paraspinal muscles. The fat infiltration was significantly correlated with bone mass and degeneration in the lumbar spine.

Correlation between thoracolumbar disc degeneration and anatomical spinopelvic parameters in supine position on MRI

Sven S. Walter et al.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between spinopelvic parameters and disc bulging, but not with disc degeneration, back pain, or cardiovascular risk factors. Men had a greater sacral slope, while women had a greater lumbar lordosis. Age was associated with pelvic tilt, but not with pelvic incidence, sacral slope, or lumbar lordosis.

Assessing Fatty Infiltration of Paraspinal Muscles in Patients With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: Goutallier Classification and Quantitative MRI Measurements

Filippo Mandelli et al.

Summary: The study compared the assessment of paraspinal muscle fatty infiltration using qualitative and quantitative methods, showing a strong correlation between the Goutallier classification and quantitative measurements. Paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area had the strongest correlation with height and a moderate correlation with vertebral body cross-sectional area.

Mapping the medullar adiposity of lumbar spine in MRI: A feasibility study

Julien Ognard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the lumbar spine of 46 subjects and found a craniocaudal gradient of vertebral medullar adiposity that increases with age. The gradient is independent of sex or BMI. The IDEAL sequence enables quick and reproducible measurement of spine vertebral medullar adiposity.
