Production of Organizational Chiral Structures by Design

Audrey R. Sulkanen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to create organizational chirality by design with nanometer precision using atomic force microscopy-based nanolithography and chosen surface chemistry. Various chiral structures are produced with nanometer precision, with high fidelity to the designs. This research provides researchers with a new and generic means to carry out organizational chiral chemistry and opens up new promising applications.

All-Optical and One-Color Rewritable Chemical Patterning on Pristine Graphene under Water

Shuichi Toyouchi et al.

Summary: We present a facile all-optical method for spatially resolved and reversible chemical modification of a graphene monolayer. By using a tightly focused laser under water, sp(3)-type chemical defects can be introduced by photo-oxidation, and then reversibly restored to sp(2) carbon centers by a higher intensity laser through photoreduction induced by local heating. These optical methods, combined with laser direct writing technique, allow photowriting and erasing of well-defined chemical patterns on graphene with a spatial resolution of about 300 nm. The pattern can be visualized and optically read out by Raman mapping with the same excitation laser. We demonstrate the all-optical Write/Read-out/Erase of chemical functionalization patterns on graphene simply by adjusting the one-color laser intensity. This all-optical method enables flexible and efficient tailoring of physicochemical properties at the nanoscale for future applications.

Nanometer-scale patterning of hard and soft interfaces: from photolithography to molecular-scale design

Anamika Singh et al.

Summary: Many areas of modern materials chemistry require precise control over chemical environments at near-molecular scales. Most high-resolution interface patterning research has focused on hard surfaces, but design of interfaces for biological environments increasingly requires control over soft materials. This article describes a method for molecular-scale hard and soft interface design based on self-assembled molecular networks.

Symmetry and spacing controls in periodic covalent functionalization of graphite surfaces templated by self-assembled molecular networks

Shingo Hashimoto et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a method for the periodic covalent functionalization of graphite surfaces using self-assembled molecular networks as templates, creating patterns with different symmetries and pitches at the nanoscale. We observed a variety of network structures with different shapes and sizes of pores, as well as periodicities of the functionalized surfaces. Chirality information from the molecular networks was successfully transmitted to the aligned grafted aryls, and the addition of a guest molecule resulted in a change in the surface periodicity.

Dynamic Equilibrium Model for Surface Nanobubbles in Electrochemistry

Yunqing Ma et al.

Summary: Gas bubbles are ubiquitous in electrochemical processes, particularly in water electrolysis. A deep understanding of gas bubble behaviors at the electrode surface is highly desirable due to the development of gas-evolving electrocatalysis and energy conversion technology. By combining theoretical analysis and molecular simulations, the behaviors of a single nanobubble electrogenerated at a nanoelectrode were studied, revealing various nanobubble dynamic states based on slight changes in gas solubility or solute concentration.

Multicomponent Covalent Chemical Patterning of Graphene

Miriam C. Rodriguez Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates spatially controlled, multifunctional covalent chemical patterning of single layer graphene, with the ability to attach three different functional groups to the basal plane in dense, well-defined patterns. The method combines lithography and a self-limiting variant of diazonium chemistry, allowing for precise control over the layer thickness of the covalent films down to 1 nm. This research lays a solid foundation for the fabrication of chemically patterned multifunctional graphene interfaces for device applications.
