Phototriggered Complex Motion by Programmable Construction of Light-Driven Molecular Motors in Liquid Crystal Networks

Jiaxin Hou et al.

Summary: Recent developments in artificial molecular machines have allowed for precise control of molecular motion at the nanoscale. However, amplifying this motion to induce macroscopic motion remains a challenge. In this study, we successfully integrated synthetic molecular machines into liquid crystal networks, resulting in complex motion such as bending, wave-like motion, and synchronized helical motion. This research paves the way for the future design of responsive materials with enhanced complex functions.

Controlling forward and backward rotary molecular motion on demand

L. Pfeifer et al.

Summary: Synthetic molecular machines hold great potential for revolutionizing chemical and materials sciences. They can autonomously move and be controlled by external stimuli, allowing for the development of smart materials with adjustable properties. Designing building blocks that can be controlled by multiple orthogonal stimuli is crucial for creating more complex molecular machines. This study reports a push-pull substituted photo-responsive overcrowded alkene, which can switch between being a unidirectional rotary motor and a molecular switch depending on its protonation and the polarity of its environment. With its simplicity in design, ease of preparation, outstanding stability, and orthogonal control of distinct forward and backward motions, this concept paves the way for more advanced molecular machines.

A tape-reading molecular ratchet

Yansong Ren et al.

Summary: Cells process information similar to Turing machines, reading data from molecular tapes and translating it into outputs. However, synthetic small-molecule machines that can read and write information stored on artificial molecular tapes are still elusive. This study introduces a molecular ratchet system where a crown ether is transported onto an encoded molecular strand by a chemical fuel pulse. The crown ether is then transported through the tape compartments and changes conformation based on the binding sites, allowing the stereochemical information on the tape to be read out as a string of digits.

Visible light activated BINOL-derived chiroptical switches based on boron integrated hydrazone complexes

Sven van Vliet et al.

Summary: Chiral optical switches, which use light to reversibly control chirality, have promising applications. This study reports visible light responsive chiroptical switches that show significant chiroptical changes after visible light irradiation. The thermal stability of these chiroptical switching systems can be easily adjusted by introducing substituents onto the olefinic bond, providing control over their thermal stability.

Light-driven molecular motors embedded in covalent organic frameworks

Cosima Staehler et al.

Summary: The incorporation of molecular machines into porous framework structures has the potential to enhance various functions such as nano actuation and molecular transport. In this study, a light-driven molecular motor was synthesized and integrated into polymers and covalent organic frameworks (COF). The structural and dynamic properties of the resulting solids were analyzed using spectroscopic, diffraction, and theoretical methods. A crystalline 2D COF with stacked hexagonal layers containing 20 mol% molecular motors was successfully synthesized. The COF exhibited high pore volume and surface area. The supramolecular assembly and motor dynamics of the COF layers were also investigated. This research provides important insights for the analysis, design, and synthesis of motorized porous framework materials.

All-Red-Light Photoswitching of Indirubin Controlled by Supramolecular Interactions

Stefan Thumser et al.

Summary: This study introduces a strategy to convert the long-known purple indirubin dye into a prolific red-light-responsive photoswitch, achieving a change in photochromism and higher yields of the E-isomer upon irradiation. Additionally, red light of longer wavelengths can induce E to Z photoisomerization, making indirubin a unique example of reversible photoswitching using entirely red light for both switching directions.

Summary: The study reveals that electron withdrawing substituents lead to higher activity in lower frequency modes in molecular motors, causing a distortion in the ethylenic axle. Conversely, electron donating substituents maintain the double bond character of the axle. Additionally, further structural reorganization is observed on a sub-picosecond time scale.

Multistate Switching of Spin Selectivity in Electron Transport through Light-Driven Molecular Motors

Qirong Zhu et al.

Summary: Electron transmission through chiral molecules depends on the electron's spin, known as Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS), with preference for a specific spin determined by the system's handedness and electron tunneling direction. Molecular motors based on overcrowded alkenes exhibit multiple inversions of helical chirality under light and thermal changes, leading to multistate switching of spin selectivity. By modulating the spin selectivity through controlled sequences of helical states, opportunities arise for high spatio-temporal precision in on-demand tuning of spin selectivity.
