Progress in Solid Polymer Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries and Beyond

Yong An et al.

Summary: Current solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for high-performance lithium-ion batteries have limitations including low ionic conductivity, low Li+ transference number, poor electrode/electrolyte interface contact, and poor long-term stability of Li metal.@AllArgsConstructor, in-depth research on improving these aspects is crucial for the commercialization of SPEs and the development of safe, high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Decoupling the Modulus and Toughness Effects of Solid Polymer Electrolytes in All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Yongwei Zheng et al.

Summary: Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have gained increasing attention for all solid-state lithium battery (ASSLB) applications, with recent research suggesting that mechanical properties such as elasticity and toughness are also crucial in addition to polymer shear modulus. An innovative approach of introducing ultrahigh-molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide) to form semi-interpenetrating network (s-IPN) SPEs has successfully decoupled toughness and modulus effects, leading to improved lithium symmetric cell cycling life and overall battery performance. This work highlights the importance of toughness as a key criterion in future SPE design.

Strategies towards enabling lithium metal in batteries: interphases and electrodes

Birger Horstmann et al.

Summary: Despite the approaching performance limits of lithium-ion intercalation batteries, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies, with a focus on the use of lithium metal anode. However, the poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode in liquid electrolytes present challenges for reversible cycling. Experimental and theoretical insights are being used to explore pathways for stable cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal and improvements in understanding lithium metal nucleation and deposition on the nanoscale. Recent advances in electrolytes and SEI design show potential for stable cycling and mitigation of morphological instabilities.

Cellulose Nanofiber Nanocomposite Pervaporation Membranes for Ethanol Recovery

Aristotelis Kamtsikakis et al.

Summary: This study prepared dense nanocomposite pervaporation membranes containing cellulose nanofibers, and found that increasing the concentration of nanofibers can enhance the mechanical properties and water permeability of the membrane. Under certain conditions, the addition of cellulose nanofibers can increase fluxes, but also reduce separation efficiency.

Bacterial Cellulose Composite Solid Polymer Electrolyte With High Tensile Strength and Lithium Dendrite Inhibition for Long Life Battery

Yuhan Li et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the composite solid polymer electrolyte (CSPE) prepared by adding bacterial cellulose (BC) to PEO/LiTFSI electrolyte has a higher lithium ion transference number, tensile strength, and wider electrochemical window. It can effectively inhibit the growth of lithium dendrite and improve the cycle life of lithium metal batteries.
