MSI1 and HDA6 function interdependently to control flowering time via chromatin modifications

Yingchao Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that MSI1 and HDA6 interact to repress flowering time control genes through histone modifications. HDA6-mediated H3K9 deacetylation is dependent on MSI1, while H3K27Me3 mediated by PRC2 containing MSI1 is also dependent on HDA6. The findings reveal the crucial role of the HDA6-MSI1 module in mediating the interaction between histone deacetylation and H3K27Me3 to repress gene expression.

CRISPR-Cas-mediated transcriptional control and epi-mutagenesis

Jason Gardiner et al.

Summary: Tools for sequence-specific DNA binding have provided new approaches for studying biology and crop development. Recent advancements in sequence-specific targeting tools have focused on developing CRISPR-Cas-based systems, which use a catalytically inactive Cas protein as a vector to control gene expression or alter DNA methylation. Researchers are currently working on developing versions of CRISPR-dCas systems that can target multiple effector domains and combining different effector domains and targeting strategies to enhance the system's functionality and efficiency.

A histone H3K27me3 reader cooperates with a family of PHD finger-containing proteins to regulate flowering time in Arabidopsis

Feng Qian et al.

Summary: The study identified BDT1 as a reader of H3K27me3, which prevents early flowering by suppressing the expression of flowering genes. It was found that PHD proteins enhance the binding of BDT1 to H3K27me3, playing a critical role in preventing early flowering.

Ectopic targeting of CG DNA methylation in Arabidopsis with the bacterial SssI methyltransferase

Wanlu Liu et al.

Summary: The ability to target DNA methylation to specific loci is crucial in both basic and applied research, and using an artificial zinc finger protein to target the CG-specific methyltransferase SssI for DNA methylation demonstrates the chromatin features that are favorable for efficient methylation gain.

Arabidopsis MORC proteins function in the efficient establishment of RNA directed DNA methylation

Yan Xue et al.

Summary: ATPases of the Microrchidia (MORC) family play essential roles in transposable element silencing and heterochromatin condensation in plants and animals. Studies in Arabidopsis show that MORC proteins colocalize with RNA-directed DNA methylation sites and act as molecular tethers to facilitate efficient establishment of DNA methylation. These findings have implications for understanding the function of MORC proteins in various eukaryotic organisms.
