Natural resources and sustainable development: Evaluating the role of remittances and energy resources efficiency

Yasir Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigates whether natural resources are curse or blessings for sustainable development in the South Asian economies. The findings reveal that natural resources have a positive impact on sustainable development in South Asian economies, while remittances have a negative effect. Technological innovation and energy efficiency also contribute to sustainable development in the region.

Revenue sources of natural resources rents and its impact on sustainable development: Evidence from global data

Rong Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of natural resource rents on global sustainable development, as well as the impact of energy productivity and the development of environmental-related technological innovation from 1990 to 2020. Various time-series approaches, including parametric approaches, are used. The findings suggest that natural resources asymmetrically influence sustainable development, with mineral and natural gas rents having a positive effect and forest rents having a negative effect. Energy productivity is significant, while environmental-related technological development has a positive but insignificant impact on global sustainable development. The study suggests policies to promote the sustainable use of natural resource rents, enhance energy productivity, and invest in environmental-related technological innovation.

The roles of energy, natural resources, agriculture and regional integration on CO2 emissions in selected countries of ASEAN: does political constraint matter?

Muhammad Ibrahim Shah et al.

Summary: This paper empirically examines the effects of energy, natural resources, agriculture, political constraint and regional integration on CO2 emissions in four ASEAN countries. The findings show that renewable energy consumption has a negative impact on CO2 emissions while fossil fuel energy degrades the environment. The role of natural resources was found to be favourable for environmental quality with the impact of agriculture being detrimental.

Renewable energy and economic growth: New insight from country risks

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth from various risk-based perspectives, finding that different types of risks have different threshold effects on this relationship. Specifically, political risks and composite risks exhibit a single threshold, while economic risks and financial risks show a double threshold.

Heterogeneous effect of GHG emissions and fossil energy on well-being and income in emerging economies: a critical appraisal of the role of environmental stringency and green energy

Muhammad Tariq et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental protection and socio-economic development on human well-being and income. The findings indicate that green energy consumption and electricity consumption have a positive effect on well-being and per capita income. The study also finds that stringent environmental policy decreases per capita income but increases well-being, and fossil energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions have a negative effect on well-being but a positive impact on income.

Does democracy really improve environmental quality? Empirical contribution to the environmental politics debate

Alex O. Acheampong et al.

Summary: The theoretical debate on the relationship between democracy and the environment remains contentious. This study explores the effect of democracy on environmental degradation in sub-Saharan African countries. The research finds that high-level democracy indicators drive CO2 emissions in the region, but also moderate GDP per capita and energy consumption's impact on emissions.

Examining the agriculture induced Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in BRICS economies: The role of renewable energy as a moderator

Muhammad Ibrahim Shah et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of economic growth, agriculture, renewable energy, information and communication technology (ICT), and human capital on carbon emissions in BRICS countries from 1990 to 2019. Various econometric techniques were used, and the results show the existence of an environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis for agriculture in BRICS economies. The use of renewable energy and ICT has a negative and significant effect on carbon emissions. The study also highlights the moderating effect of renewable energy on agriculture's contribution to climate change.

Testing the N-shaped environmental Kuznets Curve in Algeria: An imperious role of natural resources and economic globalization

Khurram Shehzad et al.

Summary: Natural resources play a crucial role in the economy of Algeria, particularly in terms of natural gas. The study reveals that income generated from natural resources significantly improves environmental quality in Algeria. However, economic globalization is positively associated with environmental degradation. Imposing tariffs on the import of environmentally harmful goods and services is of great importance. The study also finds an N-shaped relationship between economic growth and ecological footprints, with a bidirectional causality effect observed between economic growth and environmental degradation.

Does official development assistance alleviate the environmental pressures during the urbanization of recipient countries? Evidence from the sub-Saharan Africa countries

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the long-term equilibrium of the urbanization-environment nexus in 37 sub-Saharan African countries and the impact of official development assistance on this nexus. The results show that urbanization increases environmental pressure in these countries, and there are double threshold effects of official development assistance on the urbanization-carbon emissions and urbanization-ecological footprint nexus.

Modelling the role of institutional quality on carbon emissions in Sub-Saharan African countries

Sitara Karim et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of institutional quality on CO2 emissions and finds that corruption control, regulatory quality, and the rule of law significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, there is a one-way causality from CO2 emissions to industrialization, economic growth, and energy consumption, while a two-way causality is observed between CO2 emissions and population growth as well as institutional quality indices.

Natural resource rents and economic growth in the top resource-abundant countries: A PMG estimation

Ousama Ben-Salha et al.

Summary: The paper examines the relationship between natural resource rents and economic growth, finding support for the natural resource bless hypothesis in the long run, but not in the short run. Economic growth has a positive impact on resource rents, and a feedback causal relationship exists between the two variables. Additionally, there is heterogeneity of results across countries in the short run.

Renewable energy output in sub Saharan Africa

Richmond Silvanus Baye et al.

Summary: This paper examines the underlying factors driving renewable energy output in Sub-Saharan African countries, finding that factors such as CO2 emissions, income levels, oil prices, trade openness, and natural resource rents play a significant role. The study proposes several policy recommendations, including incorporating environmental awareness into national development plans, encouraging middle-class consumption of renewable energy, and implementing and expanding feed-in-tariff systems.

Landscapes of opportunity: patterns of young people's engagement with the rural economy in sub-Saharan Africa

Kibrom A. Abay et al.

Summary: Research shows that young people in sub-Saharan Africa participate in agriculture at similar rates to older people, while engagement in non-farm wage employment and business activities changes with age, peaking in the 30s. Those in their 20s are most likely to report no activity. In more remote areas, individuals tend to leave school earlier and have lower participation in the non-farm sector compared to those in more accessible places.
