Impulse-control disorders and restless leg syndrome in Parkinson's Disease: Association or coexistence

Birinder S. Paul et al.

Summary: Both impulse-control disorders and restless leg syndrome are common in Parkinson's disease patients, but their relationship and association with dopaminergic therapy are not well understood. This study aimed to determine the correlation between impulse-control disorders and restless leg syndrome, and also to identify the significant psycho-behavioral profile of restless leg syndrome patients with impulse-control disorders. The results showed that 11% of Parkinson's disease patients had co-occurrence of restless leg syndrome and impulse-control disorders. The fluctuation in dopamine release levels along with a hyper-dopaminergic state may contribute to this behavioral profile. Long-term dopaminergic treatment or the degenerative process itself could be the underlying cause of both restless leg syndrome and impulse-control disorders in Parkinson's disease patients.

Genetics of Parkinson's disease in the Polish population

Lukasz M. Milanowski et al.

Summary: This study summarised the genetic causes of Parkinson's disease in the Polish population, identifying pathogenic variants in four monogenic genes and eight genes associated with PD risk. The discovery of SNCA duplication in a Polish PD patient highlights the importance of reporting genetic findings in specific populations for personalized medicine.

Does the Country Make a Difference in Impulse Control Disorders? A Systematic Review

Paloma Parra-Diaz et al.

Summary: By analyzing 32 studies from 22 countries, it was found that there are significant differences in the prevalence of ICDs in different countries, with higher rates in Western countries and a higher proportion of patients receiving DA treatment. Hypersexuality is the most common ICD, while gambling has a higher prevalence in Japan.
