Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl3

Summary: This study provides detailed measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity k(xy) in alpha-RuCl3. It is found that k(xy) strongly depends on temperature between 0.5 and 10K. The spin excitations evolve into magnon-like modes with a Chern number of approximately 1 at high magnetic fields, instead of showing the expected half-quantization effect of k(xy)/T.

Robustness of the thermal Hall effect close to half-quantization in α-RuCl3

Thermodynamic evidence for a field-angle-dependent Majorana gap in a Kitaev spin liquid

Summary: By measuring the heat capacity of alpha-RuCl3 under different magnetic field directions, this study reveals strongly angle-dependent low-energy excitations in the material. These findings are consistent with the characteristics of itinerant Majorana fermions in the Kitaev model. Furthermore, the changes in edge transport correspond to the opening and closing of the bulk gap according to the magnetic field direction, and the absence of the quantum thermal Hall effect at higher magnetic fields suggests a nematic quantum spin liquid state with two-fold rotational symmetry.

Resonant thermal Hall effect of phonons coupled to dynamical defects

Summary: In this study, we calculate the thermal Hall coefficient of phonons scattering off a defect with multiple energy levels. Our results show that the perturbative contribution in the phonon-defect coupling is proportional to the phonon lifetime and has a side-jump interpretation. We also find that the thermal Hall angle is independent of the phonon lifetime.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl3

Summary: Recent reports have shown the presence of half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance in the two-dimensional honeycomb material alpha-RuCl3, even in magnetic fields without out-of-plane components. The measured field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance in alpha-RuCl3 has the same sign structure as the topological Chern number of the pure Kitaev spin liquid, indicating that the non-Abelian topological order persists in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions.
