Comparative analysis of biotic indices for assessment of water quality of Balaban Stream in West Anatolia, Turkey

Summary: This study aimed to determine the water quality of Balaban Stream and compare the performance of different indices. By using biotic and diversity indices based on benthic macroinvertebrates, the water quality of Balaban Stream was found to be unpolluted-slightly polluted. The BMWP-O, BMWP-S, BMWP-H, ASPT-O, ASPT-H, and ASPT-C indices were found to be more suitable for determining the water quality of Balaban Stream compared to the SI, FBI, and BBI indices.

Bio-based versus synthetic: comparative study of plasticizers mediated stress on Chironomus circumdatus (Diptera-Chironomidae)

Summary: Phthalates, commonly used as plasticizers, have adverse effects on living organisms and there is a need for alternative bio-based plasticizers. This study compared the effects of synthetic plasticizer dioctyl phthalate and bio-based plasticizer ethanolamine on Chironomus circumdatus larvae. The results showed that both plasticizers caused stress in the larvae, but dioctyl phthalate had a greater impact.

A benthic invertebrates-based biotic index to assess the ecological status of West African Sahel Rivers, Burkina Faso

Summary: This study aims to develop a multi-metric index approach to assess the ecological quality of rivers in the Sahel region affected by human activities. By examining the macroinvertebrate communities in the rivers, 40 sample sites were evaluated and six core metrics were selected to compose a multi-metric index. The results show that the index is able to assess the ecological integrity of water bodies affected by human pressures.

Characterisation of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities in Small Watercourses of the European Central Plains Ecoregion and the Effect of Different Environmental Factors

Summary: Macroinvertebrates play a vital role in aquatic ecosystems as food sources for vertebrates and indicators of habitat quality. This study focused on comparing the biodiversity of macrozoobenthos assemblages and assessing the influence of physicochemical and hydrological conditions on their abundance and density in small rivers in agricultural areas. Results showed that oxygenation and nitrogen content were important factors affecting the presence of macroinvertebrates in these rivers, while some organisms exhibited sensitivity to changes in water temperature, flow, and depth.

Diversity Patterns and Assemblage Structure of Non-Biting Midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) in Urban Waterbodies

Summary: Urban waters are often overlooked in biodiversity research, but this study highlights the impressive number of aquatic microhabitats present in a city and its surrounding urban area. The research investigates the faunistic and diversity patterns of waterbodies in the Belgrade functional urban area and assesses the effects of environmental factors on Chironomidae assemblages. The study identifies clear preferences and tolerances of different chironomid assemblages to specific habitat conditions and anthropogenic pressures, with waterbody type, water quality, temperature, and pollution playing important roles in the distribution and composition of the assemblages.

Water Quality and Anthropogenic Impact Assessment Using Macroinvertebrates as Bioindicators in a Stream Ecosystem

Summary: In this study, the water quality and anthropogenic impacts of the Dachigam-Dara catchment were assessed and evaluated. The upstream and confluence zones showed better water quality and higher diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates. The distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage in the catchment was influenced by pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and phosphate phosphorous. Over time, there was a progressive shift from pollution-sensitive taxa to pollution-tolerant taxa in response to anthropogenic activities.

Temporal variation in Oligochaeta species composition in an anthropized stretch of a Neotropical urban river

Summary: Urban aquatic environments are constantly affected by changes in limnological variables, leading to increased pollution. Aquatic Oligochaeta can serve as bioindicators of environmental change. This study focused on the Iguacu River, the second most polluted river in Brazil, and aimed to understand the temporal changes in Oligochaeta species composition and beta diversity in an anthropized stretch of the river. The results showed that changes in abiotic variables caused shifts in species composition and a decrease in beta diversity over the years.

Seasonal Distribution of Ephemeroptera (Insects) Fauna and Relationship Among Physicochemical Parameters in the Ceyhan Basin

Summary: This study aimed to determine the Ephemeroptera fauna in the Ceyhan Basin and investigate its relationship with physicochemical parameters. A total of 17 new species records were identified, and variations in diversity and evenness were observed across different seasons and stations. Determination of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna and Some Physicochemical Properties of Balaban Lake (Menderes- Izmir)

Summary: The study aimed to identify the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and physicochemical characteristics of Balaban Lake in Menderes, Izmir. A total of 25 taxa were classified, with the 2nd and 3rd stations being the most similar, followed by the 1st and 4th stations. Strong positive correlations were found between certain physicochemical factors and specific taxa, while a strong negative correlation was observed with another taxon. This is the first study on the benthic fauna of Balaban Lake, with all taxa recorded for the first time.
