Preparation of highly stable oleogel-based nanoemulsions for encapsulation and controlled release of curcumin

Camila A. Palla et al.

Summary: This study successfully loaded curcumin into monoglyceride (MG) oleogels and produced stable gelled-oil nanoemulsions. The effects of ultrasonication processing parameters and formulation on particle size and stability were evaluated, and a surfactant mixture of Pluronic F-68 and Tween 80 with a low oleogel/aqueous phase ratio produced the most stable nanoemulsions. The results also showed that structuring oil particles with MG crystals can enhance the encapsulation efficiency of curcumin and slow down its release.

Developed and characterization of nanostructured lipid carriers containing food-grade interesterified lipid phase for food application

Mayanny Gomes da Silva et al.

Summary: The main objectives of this study were to produce new nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) and investigate the influence of lipid composition on the physical characteristics and stability of NLCs. The results showed that NLCs were influenced by chemical interesterification and the composition of the solid lipid used, particularly in relation to the fatty acid chain size. NLCs developed with a simple lipid phase exhibited larger particle sizes when saturated fatty acids with larger chain sizes were used. Interesterification reduced the melting temperature of NLCs and favored the formation of crystals in the beta' form, which is beneficial for incorporating bioactive compounds. The composition of the NLCs developed in this study is innovative and holds great potential for food applications.

Fabrication, characterization, and performance of antimicrobial alginate-based films containing thymol-loaded lipid nanoparticles: Comparison of nanoemulsions and nanostructured lipid carriers

Neda Karimi-Khorrami et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial biopolymer films were prepared by incorporating thymol-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) or nanoemulsions (NE) into Ca-alginate solutions. The NLC-loaded films showed increased porosity and surface roughness, thickness, water vapor permeability, and yellowness, but decreased water contact angle, mechanical strength, and swelling ratio. The release of thymol was slower for NLC-loaded films, especially for the NLC20 film, which also exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity. Encapsulating antimicrobial essential oils within NLCs was more effective at creating antimicrobial films with sustained release properties than encapsulating them within NEs.

Dependence of the Core-Shell Structure on the Lipid Composition of Nanostructured Lipid Carriers: Implications for Drug Carrier Design

Ni 'matul Izza et al.

Summary: Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) are a new generation of lipid vectors for drug delivery systems (DDSs) that have a complex structure composed of solid and liquid lipids. This study provides molecular and physicochemical characterizations of the NLC core region. The study found that NLCs have a more rigid shell and a less rigid core, and also exhibit a crystal-like lamellar structure. The concentration of solid lipids affects the structure of the NLCs. By adjusting the lipid composition, an optimized design of NLCs with high efficacy for DDSs can be achieved.
