Summary: In order to halt the loss of global biodiversity and considering the United Nations Decade for Ocean Conservation Agenda, increasing efforts to improve biomonitoring programs and assessment of ecosystem health are needed. Aquatic environments are among the most complex to monitor, requiring an array of tools to assess their status and to define conservation targets. Shifts in fish composition and abundance are often good indicators of ecosystem health status in relation to anthropogenic activities. However, traditional monitoring methods are strictly related to the habitat under study and cannot be applied universally.

Optic cup morphogenesis across species and related inborn human eye defects

Summary: The vertebrate eye acquires its cup-like shape early in development through a process called optic cup morphogenesis, which has been studied using live imaging of transparent teleost embryos and mammalian stem cell-derived organoids. This review summarizes the resulting scenarios and proposed models, including both common and species-specific events, and discusses how these studies can provide insights into human eye malformations resulting from failures in optic cup morphogenesis.

Acoustic zone monitoring to quantify fine-scale movements of aquatic animals in a narrow water body
