Sex differences in esophageal cancer overall and by histological subtype

Nickolas Stabellini et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related death. The incidence of esophageal cancer is higher in males, but there is limited data on prognosis and survival. This study aimed to analyze the differences between sexes and other factors in patients with primary esophageal cancer. The analysis of data from 2005 to 2020 showed differences between males and females in age at diagnosis, histology, smoking status, and prescriptions of NSAIDs. However, there was no significant difference in survival between males and females.

Stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 as a therapeutic target for cancer: a focus on hepatocellular carcinoma

Mortaza Raeisi et al.

Summary: One of the main characteristics of cancer cells is the alteration in lipid composition, particularly the enrichment of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). The enzyme stearoyl CoA desaturase (SCD1), which converts saturated fatty acids to monounsaturated fatty acids, is overexpressed in various cancer cells and is associated with cancer aggressiveness and poor patient outcome. SCD1 also plays a role in cancer cell proliferation, migration, chemoresistance, and maintenance of cancer stem cells properties. Therefore, SCD1 may be a potential therapeutic target in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other cancers.

KRAS Affects Adipogenic Differentiation by Regulating Autophagy and MAPK Activation in 3T3-L1 and C2C12 Cells

Wenjie Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that inhibition of KRAS in 3T3-L1 and C2C12 cells altered the expression of key proteins involved in cell proliferation, autophagy, and adipogenic differentiation, leading to reduced proliferation capacity, enhanced differentiation into mature adipocytes, and increased lipid accumulation. Additionally, KRAS inhibition decreased the activation levels of several signaling pathways during differentiation. These results demonstrate the unique regulatory effects of KRAS on cell processes related to adipogenesis and lipid accumulation.

Mechanisms of stearoyl CoA desaturase inhibitor sensitivity and acquired resistance in cancer

Nicole Oatman et al.

Summary: In glioblastoma, some patients have low levels of SCD expression, leading to the evolution of cell lines that can survive independent of SCD, despite unknown mechanisms. Cell lines that escape genetic and epigenetic alterations become highly dependent on SCD for survival. Resistance to SCD inhibition in SCD-dependent lines is mediated through a previously unknown FOSB mechanism, which can be blunted to extend survival in tumor-bearing mice.
