Delayed elastic contributions to the viscoelastic response of foams

Francois A. Lavergne et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the slow viscoelastic response of a foam can be described by a power-law fluid with a terminal relaxation. The reversible power-law contribution accounts for the observed non-Maxwellian features in various tests, indicating a delayed elastic response. The power-law spectrum originates from a combination of superdiffusive bubble dynamics and stress diffusion.

Anomalous diffusion dynamics of learning in deep neural networks

Guozhang Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals the effectiveness of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) in deep learning by investigating its interactions with the geometrical structure of the loss landscape. The study finds that SGD exhibits rich, complex dynamics with superdiffusion in the initial learning phase and subdiffusion at long times. These learning dynamics are observed in different types of deep neural networks and are independent of batch size and learning rate settings. The superdiffusion process is attributed to the interactions between SGD and fractal-like regions of the loss landscape.

Microscopic dynamics underlying the stress relaxation of arrested soft materials

Jake Song et al.

Summary: Arrested soft materials exhibit slow stress relaxation in response to linear mechanical perturbations, but the microscopic origins of this relaxation are poorly understood. Through X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, we studied the dynamics of a model associative gel system and found that the mean stress relaxation time is correlated to the quiescent superdiffusive dynamics of microscopic clusters during arrest. Small mechanical deformations can also induce intermittent avalanches, leading to a non-Gaussian spectrum of relaxation modes in stress relaxation measurements.

Pervasive cytoquakes in the actomyosin cortex across cell types and substrate stiffness

Yu Shi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of sudden dynamic reconfigurations and displacements in the actomyosin cortex of cells, termed cytoquakes, across different cell types and mechanical environments. These fluctuations may indicate a marginally stable mechanical state of the cortex, which could contribute to cell mechanical properties, active behavior, and mechanosensing.

Active gels, heavy tails, and the cytoskeleton

Daniel W. Swartz et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a simple active gel model can simulate the anomalous diffusion behavior in the cytoskeleton, with the power-law tails in displacements related to the shape and dimensionality of force dipoles distribution within the cell. Different results are found for force dipoles in structures of different dimensions, impacting the cytoskeletal displacements. This model not only contributes to understanding the behavior of active gels in cells, but also has potential applications in synthetic active gels.
