The relationship between inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Saahithh Redddi Patlola et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between Interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-113, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha, and CRP with cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia patients. The meta-analyses results show a significant inverse relationship between cognitive performance and systemic levels of these inflammatory markers. Understanding the connection between inflammation and cognitive decline in schizophrenia patients can have a significant impact on disease progression and quality of life.

Inflammatory markers in type 2 diabetes with vs. without cognitive impairment; a systematic review and meta-analysis

Natasha Z. Anita et al.

Summary: People with type 2 diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, with systemic inflammation proposed as a common risk factor. This study found that cognitive impairment in T2DM patients was associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers like IL-6, CRP, sVCAM-1, and AGEs, as well as lower levels of BDNF. These findings suggest an inflammatory-vascular interaction contributing to cognitive impairment in T2DM.

Metabolic syndrome components are associated with cognitive impairment and functional impairments. TG and FPG show the strongest associations with neurocognitive and social functioning.

MiR-30 promotes fatty acid beta-oxidation and endothelial cell dysfunction and is a circulating biomarker of coronary microvascular dysfunction in pre-clinical models of diabetes

Shawn Veitch et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in miR-30d and miR-30e is associated with coronary microvascular dysfunction, rarefaction, and the development of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in T2D models. These miRNAs may serve as early biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets, reflecting altered endothelial cell fatty acid metabolism and microvascular dysfunction in the diabetic heart.

Comparison of cognitive impairments with lipid profiles and inflammatory biomarkers in unipolar and bipolar depression

Shu-Fang Zhang et al.

Summary: Cognitive impairments are important symptoms in both Unipolar Depressive Disorder (UD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD), but they are difficult to distinguish. This study aimed to highlight the difference in cognitive ability between UD and BD by analyzing lipid profiles and inflammatory biomarkers in major depressive episodes (MDE). The results showed that cognitive impairments were more common in BD, especially in severe cases. UD showed better cognitive ability than BD, particularly in the language domain. Additionally, the study found that ApoB, CRP, and BDNF could potentially be used as peripheral candidates in cognitive evaluation to distinguish between UD and BD.

Oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses in mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Gallayaporn Nantachai et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the nitro-oxidative stress (O&NS)/antioxidant (ANTIOX) ratio in the peripheral blood of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The results showed that MCI individuals have higher O&NS/ANTIOX ratio, increased lipid peroxidation and O&NS-associated toxicity, and reduced glutathione defenses compared to healthy controls. MCI is also associated with increased homocysteine and decreased non-vitamin and vitamin antioxidant defenses. The findings suggest that MCI is partly attributed to neuro-oxidative toxicity and highlight the potential of lipid peroxidation and the glutathione system as targets for MCI treatment or prevention.

The C Factor: Cognitive dysfunction as a transdiagnostic dimension in psychopathology

Amitai Abramovitch et al.

Summary: Research suggests that cognitive deficiencies may be present across multiple psychological disorders, pointing to a transdiagnostic phenomenon. The p factor, a single dimension model of psychopathology, suggests that cognitive deficits are intrinsic and transdiagnostic. This study systematically reviewed meta-analyses and found evidence supporting the hypothesis that cognitive dysfunction is a transdiagnostic factor related to the p factor.

Summary: The ApoE gene polymorphism may impact changes in blood lipid levels and cognitive impairment in the general population, but its effects in schizophrenia have not been extensively studied. This research investigated the association of ApoE rs429358 with schizophrenia using the RBANS test and SNPStats analysis. The study found that levels of ApoA1 and ApoB were predictors for various cognitive domains in schizophrenia, with the association being regulated by the ApoE rs429358 genotype.
