Escherichia coli inactivation in water by sulfate radical-based oxidation process using FeCl3-activated biochar/persulfate system

Shengquan Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, FeCl3-activated bermudagrass-derived biochar (FA-BC) was used for the first time to activate persulfate (PS) for E. coli inactivation. The presence of Fe0 and Fe3O4 on the surface of FA-BC contributed to the activation of PS, with SO4 center dot- radicals playing a major role in E. coli inactivation in the FA-BC/PS system. Various factors, such as pH, PS concentration, reaction temperature, and FA-BC dosage, were found to affect the disinfection efficiency of E. coli using FA-BC/PS. The FA-BC/PS showed promising results in terms of E. coli inactivation and removal in different water samples.

Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Different Synthesized CuFe-MOFs: Application for Dye, Drugs, and Pathogen Removal

Antia Fdez-Sanroman et al.

Summary: Three CuFe-MOFs with different structures were synthesized successfully by varying the ratio of solvents, salts, or temperature. CuFe(BDC-NH2)(D) and CuFe(BDC-NH2)(S) exhibited improved PMS activation for Rhodamine B removal, achieving a removal rate of around 92%. The best degradation system for a mixture of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drugs was the photo-assisted activation of PMS using CuFe(BDC-NH2)(D) and CuFe(BDC-NH2)(S), resulting in complete degradation within 1 hour. CuFe(BDC-NH2)(R)/PMS showed higher antibacterial activity due to its higher copper content.

Different inactivation behaviors and mechanisms of representative pathogens (Escherichia coli bacteria, human adenoviruses and Bacillus subtilis spores) in g-C3N4-based metal-free visible-light-enabled photocatalytic disinfection

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial ability and mechanisms of a g-C3N4-based visible-light-enabled photocatalytic disinfection system with the assistance of two common oxidants. The results showed that addition of oxidants greatly enhanced the inactivation of bacteria and human viruses, with reactive oxygen species playing different roles in the disinfection processes. The disinfection efficiency could be improved through statistical optimization of catalyst loading and oxidant addition, and the selection of oxidants depended on both the target pathogen and water matrix.
