Relaxation times, rheology, and finite size effects for non-Brownian disks in two dimensions

Peter Olsson

Summary: In this study, overdamped simulations were conducted in a simple model of jamming to explore the finite size dependence of various quantities, including the relaxation time obtained from the relaxation of energy and the pressure equivalent of shear viscosity. The study found that the choice of starting configurations had a significant impact on the determination of critical divergence, and the claimed ln N dependence of the relaxation time was not as problematic as previously thought. Additionally, analyses of particle relaxation times provided useful histograms and averages for further analysis.

Relaxation Dynamics of Non-Brownian Spheres Below Jamming

Yoshihiko Nishikawa et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relaxation dynamics and criticality of non-Brownian frictionless soft spheres below jamming in various spatial dimensions and in the mean-field Mari-Kurchan model. It reveals non-trivial dependencies of relaxation time on system size and volume fraction, and shows that the relaxation time logarithmically diverges with system size at any density below jamming. The shear viscosity of non-Brownian packings is well-defined in all spatial dimensions in the thermodynamic limit, but large finite-size effects complicate its measurement close to jamming.
