Size control and electronic manipulation of Ru catalyst over B, N co-doped carbon network for high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: Exploring highly efficient Pt-free catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for hydrogen (H-2) production. In this study, a novel HER electrocatalyst with abundant ultra-small (2-3 nm) Ru confined by a B, N co-doped polar carbon surface (Ru/(B-N)-PC) was developed. The Ru/(B-N)-PC catalyst exhibited superior performance with a low overpotential, low Tafel slope and excellent durability, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. The electron communication between the B, N co-doped carbon surface and ultra-small Ru nanoparticles contributed to the electronic modification of Ru and enhanced the hydrogen evolution reaction.

High-Density Atomic Fe-N4/C in Tubular, Biomass-Derived, Nitrogen-Rich Porous Carbon as Air-Electrodes for Flexible Zn-Air Batteries

Chuanlai Jiao et al.

Summary: Low-cost single-atom catalysts (SACs) supported on waste biomass carbon have been developed for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) to enhance the performance of metal-air batteries. The hierarchical porous structure and hollow tube morphology of Fe single atoms supported on biomass carbon play a critical role in boosting ORR/OER performance. The high-loading content of Fe single atoms and ultra-high N doping compensate for the insufficient OER performance, resulting in a promising zinc-air battery with high peak power density and stable discharge-charge voltage.

Amorphous NiFe Oxide-based Nanoreactors for Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Xiaojie Li et al.

Summary: Synergy engineering is used to enhance the kinetic activity of oxygen-evolution-reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. By fabricating NiFe amorphous nanoreactor (NiFe-ANR) oxide as OER electrocatalysts, the catalyst achieves excellent activity due to its amorphousness and nanoreactor structure, which increase active sites and enrich OH- in the catalyst surface and inner part. The amorphous nanoreactor structure is found to be superior to crystalline nanoreactors or amorphous non-nanoreactors. This research provides new insights into the applications and mechanisms of amorphousness and nanoreactors, demonstrating the synergy of crystalline state and morphology.

Carbon onions coated Ni/NiO nanoparticles as catalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Yuqi Yan et al.

Summary: High-performance carbon onions coated Ni/NiO nanoparticles (CNN NPs) were synthesized as electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using a self-assembly process combined with a calcination process. By controlling the surface composition and adjusting the Ni/NiO ratio, the kinetic steps in HER could be regulated, leading to significantly improved alkaline HER activity. The CNN-500, with a Ni/NiO ratio of 1.31, exhibited an overpotential of 127 mV (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. The adjustable ratio of Ni and NiO played a crucial role in alkaline HER performance. Due to the synergistic effect between Ni, NiO, and C, the CNN-500 showed superior intrinsic catalytic activity compared to other reported HER electrocatalysts. This work provides a facile and useful strategy for high-performance alkaline HER electrocatalysts for hydrogen energy source.
