Temperature Dependence of Spin and Charge Orders in the Doped Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Bo Xiao et al.

Summary: By introducing a new development of the constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the interplay between thermal and quantum fluctuations in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We accurately and systematically characterize the evolution of spin and charge correlations as a function of temperature T and their connection to the ground state at three representative hole doping levels 6 = 1/5, 1/8, and 1/10. We observe short-range commensurate antiferromagnetic correlations that increase as T decreases, leading to the emergence of a modulated spin-density wave (SDW) with a sufficiently large correlation length.

A model of d-wave superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and charge order on the square lattice

Maine Christos et al.

Summary: Confined quantum spin liquid in hole-doped cuprates is described in this article. The spin liquid is described by a SU(2) gauge theory of Nf = 2 massless Dirac fermions. Confinement is argued to occur via the Higgs condensation of bosonic chargons carrying fundamental SU(2) gauge charges. At half-filling, there is a low-energy theory of the Higgs sector with Nb=2 relativistic bosons and an emergent SO(5)b global symmetry. A conformal SU(2) gauge theory with Nf=2 fundamental fermions, Nb=2 fundamental bosons, and a SO(5)f x SO(5)b global symmetry is proposed, which describes a deconfined quantum critical point.

Fermi surface transformation at the pseudogap critical point of a cuprate superconductor

Yawen Fang et al.

Summary: The nature of the pseudogap phase in cuprate high-temperature superconductors remains a major puzzle, especially regarding the topology of its Fermi surface. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) data suggests that within the pseudogap phase, the Fermi surface undergoes a transformation consistent with the presence of small nodal hole pockets. This indicates a change in the form of the Fermi surface when the pseudogap is present, potentially explaining the low carrier density in this regime.

Emergent quasiparticles at Luttinger surfaces

Michele Fabrizio

Summary: The analytic properties of Fermi surfaces and Luttinger surfaces determine the formation of quasiparticles, and this research shows that quasiparticles can also exist near Luttinger surfaces. The thermodynamic and dynamic properties of these "quasiparticles" are identical to conventional ones.

Fermionic wave functions from neural-network constrained hidden states

Javier Robledo Moreno et al.

Summary: We introduce a new family of variational wave functions for simulating strongly correlated fermionic systems. By incorporating hidden additional degrees of freedom and optimizing the constraint and single-particle orbitals using a neural network parameterization, our construction overcomes limitations of hidden-particle representations and is proven to be universal. Applied to the ground-state properties of the Hubbard model, our approach achieves competitive levels of accuracy with state-of-the-art variational methods.

SU(2) gauge theory of the pseudogap phase in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Pietro M. Bonetti et al.

Summary: In this study, a SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating magnetic order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model is presented, based on a fractionalization of electrons in fermionic chargons and bosonic spinons. Different magnetic order phenomena are observed for chargons below a density-dependent transition temperature T*, while spinon fluctuations prevent the formation of magnetic long-range order of the electrons at any finite temperature.

Solvable theory of a strange metal at the breakdown of a heavy Fermi liquid

Erik E. Aldape et al.

Summary: The article introduces an effective theory for describing quantum critical points in heavy-fermion systems, capturing a strongly coupled metallic QCP within a controlled large-N limit. The theory demonstrates robust Fermi-liquid transport phenomenology and Planckian transport lifetime in the parameter regime of strong damping of emergent bosonic excitations.

Electronic spectra with paramagnon fractionalization in the single-band Hubbard model

Eric Mascot et al.

Summary: We examined the spectral properties of the intermediate temperature pseudogap metal phase of the cuprates proposed in a recent theory. The theory suggests that this phase can be derived from the paramagnon theory of nearly antiferromagnetic metals by fractionalizing the paramagnon into two hidden layers of S = 1/2 spins. The first hidden layer hybridizes with the electrons, similar to a Kondo lattice heavy Fermi liquid, while the second hidden layer forms a spin liquid with fractionalized spinon excitations. By computing the imaginary part of the electronic self-energy induced by the spinon excitations, we found that the energy and momentum dependence of the photoemission spectrum across the Brillouin zone matches well with experimental observations in (Pb-x, Bi2-x)(LaySr2-y)CuO6+delta and (Bi, Pb)(2)Sr2CaCu2O8+delta samples by He et al. [Science 331, 1579 (2011)] and Chen et al. [Science 366, 1099 (2019)] respectively.

Charge Order and Superconductivity as Competing Brothers in Cuprate High-Tc Superconductors

Masatoshi Imada

Summary: This review focuses on the interplay between charge order and d-wave superconductivity in high Tc copper-oxide superconductors, with an emphasis on electron fractionalization and its consequences. It discusses the severe competition between superconducting states and charge inhomogeneity, as well as the implications of electron fractionalization on the mechanism of superconductivity. Exploration of these concepts and their impact on experimental observations are overviewed, with a future vision for integrated spectroscopy to address long-standing challenges in cuprates and other strongly correlated materials.

Hidden self-energies as origin of cuprate superconductivity revealed by machine learning

Youhei Yamaji et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method of using machine learning techniques to reveal fundamental properties of matter from experimental data, and applies it to spectra data of cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The results show that the formation of superconducting gap is related to the universal peak structures, revealing the signal that generates high-Tc superconductivity.

Quantum embedding description of the Anderson lattice model with the ghost Gutzwiller approximation

Marius S. Frank et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that in certain cases, the standard Gutzwiller approximation can be orders of magnitude off. This discrepancy is attributed to the method's inability to describe both Mott physics and the hybridization between correlated and itinerant degrees of freedom simultaneously. On the other hand, the ghost Gutzwiller approximation provides results in remarkable agreement with dynamical mean-field theory throughout the entire phase diagram.

Small to large Fermi surface transition in a single-band model using randomly coupled ancillas

Alexander Nikolaenko et al.

Summary: This study presents a solvable model of a quantum transition involving a change in the size of the electron Fermi surface in a single band model without any symmetry breaking. The model shows a transition from a large Fermi surface state to a small Fermi surface state with particle-hole asymmetric pseudogap in the local electron spectral function. Connections to the physics of hole-doped cuprates and a holographic analogy to wormhole transitions between multiple black holes are also discussed.
