Hydrodynamic cavitation-enhanced photocatalytic activity of P-doped TiO2 for degradation of ciprofloxacin: Synergetic effect and mechanism

Mengfan Chen et al.

Summary: Hybrid methods combining hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been proposed for the removal of organic contaminants. In this study, the synergetic effect between photocatalytic processes and HC was utilized to enhance the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by P-doped TiO2 catalysts. The CIP degradation ratio reached 90.63% in HC-assisted photocatalytic processes, compared to 20.37% in HC alone and 55.7% in PTiO2-based photocatalytic processes alone. The mechanic microjets treatment resulted in significantly increased surface area, smaller particle sizes, cleaner surface, and improved dispersion of P-TiO2 nano photocatalysts.

Kirill Fedorov et al.

Summary: High-performance water treatment systems based on cavitational processes have gained increasing interest in the scientific community. Hydrodynamic cavitation has been proven as an effective alternative, reagent-free method for treating various pollutants in water. The combination of cavitation with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has shown enhanced oxidation capacity and the ability to degrade persistent contaminants. The synergistic effect between integrated technologies in hybrid processes contributes to their improved performance. This review discusses principles, mechanisms, and factors influencing the effectiveness of cavitation-AOP coupling, as well as the economic feasibility of these hybrid techniques in large-scale wastewater treatment.

Experimental investigation on characteristics of venturi cavitating flow and Rhodamine B degradation in methanol solution

Jiahui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of methanol concentration on the cavitation flow characteristics and degradation of Rhodamine B. The presence of methanol generates more stable bubbles and less violent bubble collapse. Methanol has no effect on the dominant frequency of pressure pulsation, but the amplitude initially increases and then stabilizes with increasing methanol concentration. The peak frequencies of vibration are not affected by methanol, but the peak amplitude decreases with increasing methanol concentration. The degradation model of RhB in methanol solution is verified and it is shown that the degradation percentage and per-pass degradation factor decrease with increasing methanol concentration.

Summary: In this study, p-nitrophenol (PNP) degradation by a hybrid advanced oxidation process combining hydrodynamic cavitation and heterogeneous Fe3O4 nanoparticles was investigated. The highest degradation rate of PNP achieved under optimal conditions was 78.8%±1.2%. The synergy in the hybrid AOP was attributed to the in-situ Fenton reactions between leached Fe2+/Fe3+ ions and H2O2, generated through transient cavitation. Additionally, Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations were used to explore the mechanism of (OH)•-mediated oxidative degradation of PNP, showing the feasibility of degradation pathways involving (OH)• addition and H abstraction reactions.
