Synergistic Inhibition of Plantaricin E/F and Lactic Acid Against Aeromonas hydrophila LPL-1 Reveals the Novel Potential of Class IIb Bacteriocin

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: This study showed that the combination of PlnEF and lactic acid had synergistic antimicrobial activity against the Gram-negative pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila. Lactic acid facilitated the interaction between PlnEF and the inner cell membrane of A. hydrophila by inducing the release of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The combined treatment caused severe morphological and intracellular changes in A. hydrophila, and inhibited its energy metabolism, protein synthesis, protein folding, and DNA replication.

Disease managing capacities and mechanisms of host effects of lactic acid bacteria

Chengcheng Ren et al.

Summary: Consumption of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is believed to have health-promoting effects on the host, but the effects are species- and strain-specific and the mechanisms involved are still under discussion. LABs can improve health through various mechanisms such as antipathogenic, gut barrier enhancement, and immune modulation. They have shown efficacy in combating infections, controlling gut inflammatory diseases, managing allergic disorders, and alleviating cancer.

In vitro screening and in vivo colonization pilot model of Lactobacillus plantarum LP5 and Campylobacter coli DSPV 458 in mice

M. J. Ruiz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of Lactobacillus plantarum strains of pork origin against Campylobacter coli strains through inhibition assays and experimental colonization pilot models in mice. It was found that L. plantarum LP5 showed the highest antagonistic activity against C. coli and had potential for in vivo study. Additionally, a reproducible colonization model for C. coli was established in mice treated with antibiotics, providing a potential alternative to antibiotic use.
