Association between personal exposure to household air pollution and gestational blood pressure among women using solid cooking fuels in rural Tamil Nadu, India

Wenlu Ye et al.

Summary: This study found that pregnant women exposed to household air pollution had higher blood pressure. The results suggest that exposure to PM2.5 and CO from solid fuel use is associated with elevated blood pressure in pregnant women during their first or second trimester.

Adverse birth outcomes associated with household air pollution from unclean cooking fuels in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review

Ashley Younger et al.

Summary: This passage highlights the negative impact of using unclean fuels on the health of pregnant women and fetuses in low- and middle-income countries. The research shows that using cleaner fuels compared to solid fuels and kerosene can increase the risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, small for gestational age, stillbirth, and neonatal mortality.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between the use of different biomass cooking fuels and the risk of low birthweight (LBW) in Uganda. The study found inconclusive evidence regarding the association between wood fuel use and LBW compared to other biomass and kerosene fuel use. The findings highlight the importance of addressing socioeconomic factors and promoting female education and sustainable development to improve household living standards.

Summary: Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is a severe pregnancy complication that can lead to maternal mortality. Various genetic factors have been shown to play an important role in the occurrence and development of PIH. This review summarizes the genetic risk factors involved in the renin-angiotensin system, endothelin system, inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and other functional networks that may contribute to the pathogenesis of PIH.

Summary: This review examines the link between indoor household exposures and morbidity and mortality outcomes in South African children and adults. The findings highlight the significant role of bioaerosols, allergens, dampness, tobacco smoking, household cooking and heating fuels, particulate matter, gaseous pollutants, and indoor spray residue in various health outcomes. The study emphasizes the need for more initiatives, programs, strategies, and policies to mitigate the negative consequences of indoor pollution.

Summary: The study in a birth cohort in Beijing, China found that prenatal exposure to PM2.5 during the second trimester was associated with higher odds of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and elevated blood glucose levels. Avoiding exposure to high pollution levels during sensitive windows could potentially prevent women from developing GDM.

Substantial transition to clean household energy mix in rural China

Guofeng Shen et al.

Summary: The household energy mix has significant impacts on human health and climate. A nationwide investigation in rural China revealed high contributions to energy supply from coal and biomass fuels, with the use of multiple energy sources being common. Compared to 2012, biomass and coal consumption decreased in 2017, while gas consumption significantly increased. The use of clean energy in rural areas is unevenly distributed and shows non-linear growth, posing challenges to achieving universal access to modern cooking energy by 2030.

Summary: The study found that postpartum blood loss is not correlated with the duration of the third stage of labor in women with retained placenta.
