Effects of extreme drought events on vegetation activity from the perspectives of meteorological and soil droughts in southwestern China

Responses of agricultural drought to meteorological drought under different climatic zones and vegetation types

Summary: Meteorological drought is strongly linked to agricultural drought and can be used as an early warning to enhance mitigation of agricultural drought. However, the response of agricultural drought to meteorological drought is not well understood. The study analyzed the evolution characteristics of meteorological drought and agricultural drought using standardized indices and calculated the drought response time and patterns in different climatic zones and underlying surface conditions in China. The findings show a high frequency of meteorological drought and agricultural drought in southeastern China and the Tibetan Plateau, with increasing trends in agricultural drought in southeastern China and meteorological drought in central and southern China. The highest probability of compound droughts was found in northern China and the regions with a semi-humid warm temperate climate. The sensitivity of agricultural drought response is higher in southeastern China and eastern parts of the Tibetan Plateau, with shorter response times. The response time is shorter in summer and autumn, and longer in winter and spring. Moreover, the response time is longer and more spatially variable in rainfed agricultural areas compared to irrigated areas. Double- and triple-crop irrigated areas have significantly shorter response times than single-crop irrigated areas, and higher crop intensity leads to shorter response times.

Restored vegetation is more resistant to extreme drought events than natural vegetation in Southwest China

Summary: Large scale Ecosystem restoration projects have been implemented in China to restore vegetation and increase carbon stocks. This study analyzed the resistance of restored vegetation to extreme drought events (EDEs) by examining their changes in Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and Water Use Efficiency (WUE). The results showed that the EDE in 2009/2010 had the longest duration and strongest severity, significantly suppressing GPP and WUE in both restored and natural vegetation. However, restored vegetation exhibited higher drought resistance compared to natural vegetation.

Summary: One of the negative consequences of climate change in Europe is the increase in severity, frequency, and duration of droughts. This research analyzed the trends in drought severity and occurrence in Europe from 1951 to 2015 using standardized precipitation index and standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The study found that while there was no significant increase in the occurrence of dry months overall, there was an increase in the severity of summer droughts across all investigated stations.

Global spatiotemporal consistency between meteorological and soil moisture drought indices

The most consistent meteorological drought index with soil moisture drought index was identified as the best representative. The results showed that different meteorological drought indices have varying levels of correlation with soil moisture drought index in different climate and land use conditions. The K-Nearest Neighbor method was found to be the most effective in identifying the most correlated meteorological drought index with soil moisture drought index.

A global 0.05° dataset for gross primary production of sunlit and shaded vegetation canopies from 1992 to 2020

Hydrologic regime alteration and influence factors in the Jialing River of the Yangtze River, China

Summary: This study quantitatively assessed the hydrological variability of the Jialing River and the contribution of climate alteration and human activities to hydrological alterations using the IHA-RVA method and Budyko hypothesis formulations. The study also revealed a low to moderate degree of alteration in various hydrological indicators, with precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and human activities contributing 61%, -16%, and 55% to the runoff alteration, respectively.

Review of Meteorological Drought in Africa: Historical Trends, Impacts, Mitigation Measures, and Prospects
