Tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP): A flame retardant in solid waste display hepatotoxic and carcinogenic risks for humans

Quaiser Saquib et al.

Summary: Recent reports confirm the widespread presence of TBEP, an organophosphorus flame retardant, in various waste sites and treatment facilities. This study demonstrates the hepatotoxic and carcinogenic potential of TBEP in human liver cells, highlighting its ability to induce DNA damage, cell cycle disturbances, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The findings suggest that workers handling waste and residents living near disposal areas are at risk of adverse health effects from direct or indirect ingestion of TBEP-containing dusts.

Bioaccumulation and potential risk of organophosphate flame retardants in coral reef fish from the Nansha Islands, South China Sea

Wenjing Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated OPFR contamination in coral reef fish from the South China Sea, finding that alkyl OPFRs were more abundant than other types, with TCPP and TBEP being the most predominant compounds. Biomagnification of OPFRs along the marine food web was observed, and dietary intake and hazard quotients of OPFR compounds for rural and urban residents were estimated. Although the risk to human health from consuming coral reef fish with OPFR contamination was low, further research on these chemicals is recommended.

Dietary Exposure to Flame Retardant Tris (2-Butoxyethyl) Phosphate Altered Neurobehavior and Neuroinflammatory Responses in a Mouse Model of Allergic Asthma

Tin-Tin Win-Shwe et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term exposure to TBEP on brain and behavior in mice. The results showed that TBEP exposure impaired memory function and led to changes in gene expression and inflammatory markers in the hippocampus. Furthermore, activation of mast cells and microglia was observed. These findings suggest that interactions between neurons, glia, and mast cells may play a role in TBEP-induced neurobehavioral toxicity.

In Vitro Assessment of the Combination of Antibiotics against Some Integron-Harbouring Enterobacteriaceae from Environmental Sources

Folake Temitope Fadare et al.

Summary: One strategy for combating antimicrobial resistance is to combine antibacterial compounds. This study examines the inhibitory effect of combining two drugs belonging to different antibiotic classes against Enterobacteriaceae isolates recovered from South African rivers and wastewater treatment plants. The study found synergistic interactions in some combinations, suggesting potential therapeutic alternatives for multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Screening of pesticides and emerging contaminants in eighteen Greek lakes by using target and non-target HRMS approaches: Occurrence and ecological risk assessment

Kyriaki Anagnostopoulpou et al.

Summary: The water quality of Greek lakes is threatened by organic micropollutants, including pesticides and pharmaceuticals, which could have potential ecological effects. A study found that DEET, caffeine, and TCPP were the most commonly detected compounds in the lakes. The maximum concentrations of different classes of pollutants varied greatly, indicating the impact of intense agricultural activity.

Analysis, occurrence, toxicity and environmental health risks of synthetic phenolic antioxidants: A review

Wanyi Wang et al.

Summary: The increasing use of synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) as food additives, with dibutyl hydroxytoluene being widely used, poses potential threats to animal and human health, as shown in animal experiments. These compounds are widely distributed in various environmental matrices and may have toxic effects at high doses. Future research should focus on studying the transformation products of SPAs.

Quantitative characterization of toxicity interaction within antibiotic-heavy metal mixtures on Chlorella pyrenoidosa by a novel area-concentration ratio method

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Toxicity interaction, synergism, and antagonism can occur when multiple pollutants are exposed to the environment simultaneously, limiting the utility of standard toxicity assessment models. The development of a novel model, the ACR method, allows for quantitative characterization of combined toxicity and shows varying trends in toxicity interactions in different mixture systems.

Urinary parabens and their potential sources of exposure among Korean children and adolescents: Korean National Environmental Health Survey 2015-2017

Sooyeon Hong et al.

Summary: The study investigated exposure profiles and sources of major parabens among Korean children and adolescents. Personal care products and dietary sources were identified as significant factors influencing urinary levels of parabens. The levels of methyl and propyl parabens in Korean children and adolescents were comparable to those in the US, but the high exposure group had much higher levels.

Early Life Exposure to Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate (TBOEP) Is Related to the Development of Childhood Asthma

Garthika Navaranjan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between exposure to 29 organophosphate esters (OPEs) and the onset of childhood asthma and recurrent wheeze. Findings showed that exposure to TBOEP was associated with an increased risk of asthma, while several other OPEs were negatively correlated with asthma and recurrent wheeze.
