Modeling the roles of rigidity and dopants in single-atom methane-to-methanol catalysts

Haojun Jia et al.

Summary: By using range-separated hybrid density functional theory (DFT), this study compares the energetics and structure of direct metal-coordinating environment in the presence of dopants and explores the similarities between doped graphitic single-atom catalysts (SACs) and natural enzymes. The research finds that SACs can convert methane to methanol, similar to the mechanism of natural enzymes.

Oxo dicopper anchored on carbon nitride for selective oxidation of methane

Pengfei Xie et al.

Summary: Selective conversion of methane into value-added chemicals is a promising approach for efficient utilization of hydrocarbon sources. In this study, the authors developed dimeric copper centers supported on graphitic carbon nitride (Cu-2@C3N4) as advanced catalysts for partial oxidation of methane. The copper-dimer catalysts demonstrated high selectivity in both thermo- and photocatalytic reactions, with hydrogen peroxide and oxygen being used as the oxidizer, achieving >10% conversion and >98% selectivity toward methyl oxygenates.

Single-step selective oxidation of methane to methanol in the aqueous phase on iridium-based catalysts

Mengwei Li et al.

Summary: In this work, a one-step conversion of methane to methanol using molecular oxygen as the oxidant in aqueous solutions with the presence of CO on copper or palladium-promoted Ir-ZSM-5 catalyst is reported. The addition of a second metal to Ir-ZSM-5 enhances catalyst activity and tunes product selectivity. The trimetallic system IrCuPd shows the best performance for methanol formation with good stability in cyclic operation.

Mechanistic Insights into Direct Methane Oxidation to Methanol on Single-Atom Transition-Metal-Modified Graphyne

Lakshitha Jasin Arachchige et al.

Summary: This study utilized density functional theory calculations and micro-kinetic studies to investigate the catalytic activity of 3d late-transition-metal atom-loaded graphyne for methane-to-methanol conversion. The research revealed decent stability of single metal atoms at pores of graphyne, and demonstrated that dispersed iron and cobalt single atoms on graphyne are capable of forming catalytically active metal-oxygen (M-O) moieties for this conversion process. Additionally, the strength of the metal-oxygen bond was found to strongly correlate with methane activation and methanol production kinetics.

Mechanistic understanding of methane-to-methanol conversion on graphene-stabilized single-atom iron centers

Sungil Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of methane-to-methanol conversion on single Fe-atom centers stabilized on N-functionalized graphene using first principles calculations. The energetically most plausible pathways were found to be a H2O2-mediated radical mechanism and a Fenton-type mechanism on di- and mono-oxo centers, respectively. The presence of solvent can affect the speed of different pathways, with the dominant Fenton-type reaction turnover being decreased.
