The Sapap3-/- mouse reconsidered as a comorbid model expressing a spectrum of pathological repetitive behaviours

Hugues Lamothe et al.

Summary: Research has found that the behavior of Sapap3 knockout mice is more complex than previously described, including sudden and rapid twitching of the head and body, resembling tic-like movements. Aberrant hindpaw scratching may also be responsible for the skin lesions observed in this mouse model. Pharmacological treatment with aripiprazole significantly reduced the number of head/body twitches, scratching, and single-phase grooming, indicating a potential treatment for tic-like symptoms in Tourette syndrome and trichotillomania.

An App knock-in rat model for Alzheimer's disease exhibiting Aβ and tau pathologies, neuronal death and cognitive impairments

Keliang Pang et al.

Summary: The lack of predictive and translatable animal models has been a major obstacle in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research. While transgenic mice overexpressing App gene do not reflect disease progression accurately, the App knock-in rat model with humanized A beta sequence shows promise in mimicking AD pathologies and progression, including A beta plaques, tau pathology, neuronal death, and cognitive deficits. This rat model may provide valuable insights for AD research and drug development.

Of pride and groom: The gains and limits of studying the neuroanatomy of rodent self-grooming in translational research

Summary: In this study, Xie et al. investigate a specific premotor circuit that regulates rhythmic orofacial forelimb movements. They demonstrate that neurons in the caudal part of spinal trigeminal nucleus, expressing Cerebellin-2, are essential for triggering forelimb movements that are involved in rodent self-grooming.

Impaired Learning and Memory Ability Induced by a Bilaterally Hippocampal Injection of Streptozotocin in Mice: Involved With the Adaptive Changes of Synaptic Plasticity

Cong-Cong Qi et al.

Summary: By establishing an AD-like mice model through bilateral hippocampal microinjection of STZ, researchers observed behavioral changes, neuronal activation, and alterations in protein expression. The results showed that the model mice displayed cognitive deficits and behavior impairments resembling AD, along with significant changes in protein expressions related to synaptic plasticity.

The Epigenome in Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Julia Reichard et al.

Summary: Neurodevelopmental diseases are characterized by diverse neurological and psychiatric symptoms, with disrupted brain development leading to functional deficits. Genetic and environmental factors during corticogenesis can contribute to deficits in neuronal identity, proportion or function, implicating the cerebral cortex in various disorders. Epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNAs, play a role in regulating neuronal development and have been associated with NDDs of varying phenotypes.
