Waste to worth: A new approach to treat wastewater sludge

Kai Zhou et al.

Summary: In response to the difficulty and high cost of wastewater sludge treatment, a new approach was proposed for carbon reduction and resource utilization. The approach involved carbonizing wastewater sludge and corn stalks together, synergizing their processes, and recycling the sludge carbonization product (SCP) for sludge dewatering. The results showed that SCP improved the dewatering performance of wastewater sludge with an aluminum salt enhancer, reduced the moisture content to 55%, and generated thermal energy for electricity production. Furthermore, the straw charcoal produced from the process could be used for exhaust gas treatment and as a soil amendment and adsorbent. Overall, this approach achieved a significant reduction in volume, greenhouse gas emissions, and disposal costs.

Hydrothermal carbonization of sludge: Effect of steam release on products properties and wall sticking phenomenon

Yao Xiao et al.

Summary: To study the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process more effectively, the effect of steam-release process at different temperatures on product properties and wall sticking phenomenon was investigated. The results showed that steam-release process significantly improved the dewatering performance and formation of porous hydrochar. It also affected the surface chemical properties of the samples and produced cleaner condensed liquid. However, the sticky wall phenomenon became more severe with increasing temperature.

Influence of process water recirculation on hydrothermal carbonization of rice husk at different temperatures

Yan Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of PW recirculation on hydrochars at temperatures of 180, 220, and 260 degrees Celsius. The results showed that PW recirculation improved the mass yield and energy recovery efficiency (ERE) of hydrochars. With increasing temperature, the mass yield decreased while ERE initially increased and then decreased. PW recirculation promoted the increase of carbon content at 180 and 220 degrees Celsius. SEM analysis showed that PW recirculation promoted the formation of carbon microspheres, with fusion occurring at 260 degrees Celsius. Overall, PW recirculation could improve the hydrothermal carbonization process to some extent.

Influence of lipid extraction and processing conditions on hydrothermal conversion of microalgae feedstocks - Effect on hydrochar composition, secondary char formation and phytotoxicity

Veronica Benavente et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of lipid extraction on microalgae feedstocks subjected to hydrothermal carbonization. It found that unextracted microalgae had higher carbonization degree and secondary char content, while extracted microalgae had lower solid yield due to more decomposition products remaining in the liquid phase. Despite potentially toxic substances, extracted hydrochars showed lower phytotoxic potential, suggesting different applications for extractive-rich hydrochars and low-temperature hydrochars.

A review on turning sewage sludge to value-added energy and materials via thermochemical conversion towards carbon neutrality

Mian Hu et al.

Summary: Due to the rapid growth of global population and economic activity, the management of sewage sludge has become a global conundrum. Traditional landfilling and land-farming methods are increasingly criticized for their negative impacts on the environment and economy, leading to the emergence of thermochemical conversion processes that aim to reduce sludge volume and recover value-added energy and materials. However, the challenges of this method, such as multiple processes and high temperatures, hinder its large-scale application. Therefore, comprehensive reviews and analyses of the thermochemical conversion of sewage sludge towards enhanced value-added energy and materials recovery are conducted to provide further perspectives and recommendations for sewage sludge management.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, hemicellulose, and protein with aqueous phase recirculation: Insight into the reaction mechanisms on hydrochar formation

Tonggui Liu et al.

Summary: Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) coupled with aqueous phase (AP) recirculation has been found to improve hydrochar production by promoting hydrochar formation and reducing oxygen content. The combination of Co-HTC and AP recirculation exhibited enhanced effects. The composition of hydrochar was mainly derived from oxygenated compounds in cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as nitrogen-containing compounds in protein. The major mechanisms for enhanced hydrochar formation during Co-HTC with AP recirculation were the Maillard reaction, catalytical effects from acids in the recycling AP, and the repolymerization or condensation of accumulated compounds in AP.

Effects of process water recirculation on yields and quality of hydrochar from hydrothermal carbonization process of rice husk

Yan Ding et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising method to convert moist lignocellulosic biomass into advanced fuels. However, the process wastewater (PW) generated during HTC poses potential pollution to the environment. This study shows that recycling and reusing PW can improve the hydrochar performance, enhancing its thermal stability and adsorption capacity.

Summary: This study investigated the dechlorination reaction during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and found that co-HTC could significantly reduce the activation energy for dechlorination. The co-HTC process achieved rapid dechlorination and carbonization, leading to a lower chloride content in the hydrochar. The recycling of process water maintained a high chloride removal efficiency.

Iron valence state evolution and hydrochar properties under hydrothermal carbonization of dyeing sludge

Yao Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the basic properties and Fe migration behavior of hydrochar during HTC treatment supplemented with nitric acid (HNO3). The results showed that the carbonization degree and yield of hydrochar treated with the HNO3 solution (HHC) were much lower than those of hydrochar treated with ultrapure water (WHC). Fe release was further enhanced with the addition of HNO3 and increase of temperature, and Fe could more easily enter the internal pores of the hydrochar instead of being deposited on the surface.
