Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran: Monitoring, Monte Carlo simulations and human health risk assessment

Ali Azari et al.

Summary: The study measured the levels of 16 PAHs in soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers using the MSPE/GC-MS method and assessed their health risks. The concentrations of 16 PAHs in soft drinks were 0.702 ppb (n-ary sumation 16PAH) and 0.196 ppb (n-ary sumation 8PAHs), while in non-alcoholic beers, they were 1.315 ppb (n-ary sumation 16PAH) and 0.288 ppb (n-ary sumation 8PAHs). The Monte Carlo simulation results showed that the THQ 95th percentiles for soft drinks were 9.497E-04 (adults) and 2.221E-03 (children), and for non-alcoholic beers, they were 3.341E-03 (children) and 1.430E-03 (adults).

Degradation of Ceftriaxone from aquatic solution using a heterogeneous and reusable O3/UV/ Fe3O4@TiO2 systems: operational factors, kinetics and mineralisation

Seyed Yaser Hashemi et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to catalytically oxidize and degrade Ceftriaxone (CTX) from aqueous solution using the heterogeneous system O-3/UV/Fe3O4@TiO(2). Through optimization of operational parameters, high removal efficiency of CTX and reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) were achieved. The reuse potential of Fe3O4@TiO2 was proven with high removal efficiency of CTX and TOC after six consecutive catalyst uses. OH degrees played a major role in the photocatalytic degradation of CTX. Integration of O-3/UV/Fe3O4@TiO(2) demonstrated excellent CTX removal performance and can be considered a promising technique for decontamination of polluted waters.

Lysozyme microspheres incorporated with anisotropic gold nanorods for ultrasound activated drug delivery

Bharat Bhargawa et al.

Summary: We present a novel approach using gold nanorods to encapsulate and release an anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil, in lysozyme microspheres. The drug release from the encapsulated microspheres was enhanced under ultrasound irradiation, resulting in excellent anticancer activity.

Dynamic interaction between lysozyme and ceftazidime: Experimental and molecular simulation approaches

Mohd Sajid Ali et al.

Summary: The interaction between the important antibiotic ceftazidime and the imperative globular protein lysozyme was studied, revealing a weak affinity between the two primarily reinforced by hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonding. The preferred binding site of ceftazidime in lysozyme was identified within a large hydrophobic pocket. Molecular dynamics simulations showed a slight change in the stability of the drug-protein complex.

Applications of Lysozyme, an Innate Immune Defense Factor, as an Alternative Antibiotic

Patrizia Ferraboschi et al.

Summary: Lysozyme is a 14 kDa protein found in mucosal secretions and tissues of animals and plants, playing a key role in innate immunity by protecting against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is known to have antimicrobial properties and has been studied for various applications as an alternative antibiotic in medicine, veterinary, and food preservation industries. The synergistic effects of lysozyme with other antimicrobial compounds are also highlighted in this review.

Noncovalent molecular interactions between antineoplastic drug gemcitabine and a carrier protein identified through spectroscopic and in silico methods

Mohd Sajid Ali et al.

Summary: The noncovalent molecular interactions between hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) and the antineoplastic drug gemcitabine were studied using spectroscopic techniques and in silico approaches. The interaction was dominated by hydrophobic forces with a possible contribution of hydrogen bonding. Gemcitabine induced slight changes in the secondary structure of HEWL and was inferred to bind in a large hydrophobic cavity of the protein.

Molecular interactions of cefoperazone with bovine serum albumin: Extensive experimental and computational investigations

Mohd Sajid Ali et al.

Summary: The study investigated the binding of the cephalosporin-class drug cefoperazone with bovine serum albumin using spectroscopic techniques and in silico methods. The importance of correcting for the inner filter effect in this type of study was emphasized, and the binding mechanism was found to involve hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic forces with almost 1:1 static binding between BSA and CFP. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation suggested the presence of a putative binding site between BSA domains 1 and 3, which could be a target for future research related to BSA-drug binding.

Lysozyme and Human Serum Albumin Proteins as Potential Nitric Oxide Cardiovascular Drug Carriers: Theoretical and Experimental Investigation

Chahlaa N. Nassab et al.

Summary: The study investigated the binding affinity of nitric oxide drugs with lysozyme and HSA proteins, revealing higher stability and better binding affinity of lysozyme-drug complexes compared to HSA. Fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy analyses showed weaker binding affinity of nitroglycerin and stronger binding affinity of S-nitrosoglutathione with lysozyme and HSA proteins. Both computational and experimental studies provided valuable data for understanding protein-drug interactions in cardiovascular diseases.
