Bi-functional CeO2 coated NiCo-MgAl core-shell catalyst with high activity and resistance to coke and H2S poisoning in methane dry reforming

Sonali Das et al.

Summary: A bi-functional core-shell catalyst has been developed for CO2 reforming of methane, which shows high catalytic activity and resistance to coke formation and H2S poisoning. The catalyst consists of a NiCo-MgAl@CeO2 core-shell structure, where the core is derived from a layered double hydroxide and the shell is made of CeO2. The catalyst exhibits high DRM activity and stability, enhanced resistance to H2S-induced deactivation, and negligible coke formation due to the steric confinement effect and the participation of lattice oxygen in coke oxidation.

Plaifa Hongmanorom et al.

Summary: An ordered mesoporous ceria, mpCeO(2), was synthesized using nanocasting, followed by strong electrostatic adsorption to prepare Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in mpCeO(2) for CO2 methanation. The Ni/mpCeO(2) catalyst showed significantly improved activity and selectivity compared to conventional CeO2-supported Ni catalyst, with the encapsulated structure and highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles playing key roles. Additionally, the mesoporous structure inhibited metal sintering, leading to excellent stability of the catalyst.

Role of lattice oxygen in methane activation on Ni-phyllosilicate@Ce1-xZrxO2 core-shell catalyst for methane dry reforming: Zr doping effect, mechanism, and kinetic study

Sonali Das et al.

Summary: Sandwich structured core-shell Ni-Phyllosilicate@Ce1-xZrxO2 catalysts with optimal Zr loading in the Ce1-xZrxO2 shell are found to greatly enhance the intrinsic activity for DRM due to increased lattice oxygen mobility of the ceria-zirconia shell and stronger metal-support interaction with Ni. Involvement of lattice oxygen in methane activation and dissociation contributes to the higher DRM activity of the Zr-doped catalyst with maximum oxygen storage capacity, as inferred from rigorous kinetic and mechanism studies.

Nature of the Active Sites on Ni/CeO2 Catalysts for Methane Conversions

Pablo G. Lustemberg et al.

Summary: Research has shown that cationic Ni atoms in clusters at step edges on the CeO2(111) surface are the most active sites for methane conversion reactions, with their small size and high Ni chemical potential contributing to their activity. Density functional theory calculations have clarified the reasons behind this observation, highlighting the importance of the size and morphology of supported Ni nanoparticles, strong Ni-support bonding, and charge transfer at step edges for high catalytic activity, particularly in the activation barrier for C-H bond cleavage during CH4 dissociative adsorption. This knowledge is expected to inspire the development of more efficient catalysts for these reactions.
