Dual Photochemical H-Atom Transfer and Cobalt Catalysis for the Desaturative Synthesis of Phenols from Cyclohexanones

Henry P. Caldora et al.

Summary: Phenols are important aromatic molecules widely found in natural products and used for the synthesis of high-value materials. However, obtaining highly substituted derivatives can be difficult, especially when their functionalization pattern does not match the reactivity of electrophilic aromatic substitution chemistry. This study presents a new and mechanistically distinct approach for phenol synthesis using saturated cyclohexanone precursors, which operates at ambient temperature under purple light irradiation and involves four sequential H-atom transfer processes in a dual catalytic manifold.

Dimeric Manganese-Catalyzed Hydroalkenylation of Alkynes with a Versatile Silicon-Based Directing Group

Yubo Pang et al.

Summary: Here we describe a manganese-catalyzed hydroalkenylation reaction that selectively introduces branched groups to terminal alkynes under mild conditions using a removable silanol directing group. Coupling with an alkenyl boronic acid partner yields (E,E)-1,3-dienes with high regio-, chemo- and stereoselectivity. The reaction proceeds at room temperature in air and is compatible with various functional groups. The resulting 1,3-dienesilanol products can be used as versatile building blocks for downstream synthesis of branched or linear 1,3-dienes and 1,3,5-trienes by removing the silanol group. Additionally, a Diels-Alder cycloaddition delivers silicon-containing pentasubstituted cyclohexenes. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations support a bimetallic synergistic activation model for the enhanced catalytic efficiency and regioselectivity observed.

Laura K. G. Ackerman-Biegasiewicz et al.

Summary: The use of two or more metal catalysts in a reaction is an efficient and selective synthetic strategy to access complex targets from simple starting materials. However, the principles governing multimetallic catalysis are not always intuitive, making the discovery and optimization of new reactions challenging. This article outlines the design elements of multimetallic catalysis using precedent from well-documented C-C bond-forming reactions, discussing advantages, limitations, and promoting the further development of the field.

Copper-catalysed difluorocarbene transfer enables modular synthesis

Xin Zeng et al.

Summary: The use of metal catalysts in controlling the reactivity of carbenes is widely used in organic synthesis, but the transfer of difluorocarbenes remains a challenge. In this study, isolable copper(I) difluorocarbene complexes were developed and used as catalysts for difluorocarbene transfer reactions. This strategy allows for the modular synthesis of organofluorine compounds and provides access to a variety of difluoromethylene-containing products. Mechanistic studies reveal a nucleophilic addition mechanism involving electrophilic copper(I) difluorocarbenes.

Copper-Catalyzed Visible-Light-Induced Allylic Difluoromethylation of Unactivated Alkenes Using Difluoroacetic Acid

Jinlian Wang et al.

Summary: We present a simple method for the allylic difluoromethylation of unactivated alkenes. Unlike previous methods that required prefunctionalized allylic substrates, this reaction uses readily available alkenes under mild conditions. Visible light irradiation with PIDA and the use of copper catalyst effectively diverts the reaction towards allylic difluoromethylation rather than hydrodifluoromethylation.

Unlocking the Nucleophilicity of Strong Alkyl C-H Bonds via Cu/Cr Catalysis

Pan Peng et al.

Summary: We report an unprecedented copper/chromium catalytic system that converts inert alkyl C-H bonds into nucleophilic alkyl-Cr(III) species at room temperature, enabling carbonyl addition reactions with strong alkyl C-H bonds. Various aryl alkyl alcohols are obtained under mild reaction conditions, even on a gram scale. Furthermore, this new radical-to-polar crossover approach is applied to the 1,1-difunctionalization of aldehydes with alkanes and different nucleophiles. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the aldehyde not only acts as a reactant but also serves as a photosensitizer to recycle the copper and chromium catalysts.

Visible-Light Photoredox-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Double Difluoromethylation of β,γ-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acids for the Synthesis of Difluoromethylated Allylic Compounds

Zhen Yao et al.

Summary: The regioselective synthesis of double difluoromethylated allylic products from easily accessible beta,gamma-unsaturated carboxylic acids and difluoromethylation reagents under visible-light photocatalysis is reported. This transformation tolerates various bromodifluoroacetates and fluorinated phosphonates, providing access to various difluoromethylated allylic products in 54-93% yield with 80:20 to 99:1 Z/E, which can not be readily synthesized using the currently known methods. Choosing fac-[Ir(ppy)(3)] as the photocatalyst and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) as the additive is crucial for the success of this transformation.
