Templated Mesoporous Silica Outer Shell for Controlled Silver Release of a Magnetically Recoverable and Reusable Nanocomposite for Water Disinfection

Ping Y. Furlan et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional magnetic silver core-shell structure Fe3O4@SiO2@Ag (MSAg) was successfully encapsulated within an outer mesoporous silica (mS) shell to form an Fe3O4@SiO2@Ag@mSiO(2) (MS-Ag-mS) nanocomposite using a cationic CTAB micelle templating strategy. The mS shell acted as a protective layer to slow down the oxidation and detachment of AgNPs, as well as provided controlled release of antimicrobial Ag+ ions. The nanocomposite demonstrated high biocidal efficiency with minimal silver leach, making it ideal for water disinfection applications.

Novel ε-polylysine/polyethyleneimine-coated Ag nanoparticles for in vitro treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: Synthesized Ag NPs coated with ε-polylysine and poly-ethyleneimine showed strong anti-P. aeruginosa capacity at low concentrations, inhibiting drug-resistant clinical strains and biofilm formation. The antibacterial mechanism was found to be primarily through induction of oxidative stress by increasing levels of ROS, which was neutralized by the ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine.

Versatile roles of silver in Ag-based nanoalloys for antibacterial applications

Zhaojian Qin et al.

Summary: The indiscriminate use of traditional antibiotics leads to the rapid evolution of multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. Silver nanostructures can efficiently treat bacteria through various mechanisms, with small sizes being more effective but prone to aggregation and instability. The stability of nano-silver can be significantly enhanced by forming alloys with other noble metal elements, maintaining antibacterial activity.
