In situ synthesis of oxygen-deficient Cu2O on eggshell membranes and study of its efficient photocatalytic activity

Tiantian Wu et al.

Summary: The conversion of biological waste into high-value-added materials is vital for environmental protection and sustainable economic development. Metal nanoparticles, with their excellent photocatalytic activity and wide selectivity, should be utilized in photo-catalysis. Green and sustainable carriers are crucial for improving the utilization and recycling of nanoparticles. In this study, we synthesized eggshell membrane (ESM)/ cuprous oxide biomass catalysts, which showed a network structure of uniformly loaded nanoparticles. The biomass composites exhibited good photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation, and the eggshell membranes acted as sacrificial agents, effectively inhibiting the accumulation of photogenerated electrons. The integration of biomaterials science and nanoscience is important in this work.

CuBi2O4 surface-modified three-dimensional graphene hydrogel adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic degradation of organic pollutants

Weijia An et al.

Summary: A CuBi2O4/rGH composite catalyst was prepared by modifying CuBi2O4 on the surface of a three-dimensional graphene hydrogel (rGH) using a water bath method. The rGH had a large specific surface area and unique surface adsorption properties, which facilitated the adsorption and enrichment of pollutant molecules that could be further degraded by the in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic effect with the addition of H2O2. The introduction of graphene increased the surface area, improved adsorption properties, and accelerated the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated charge, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic Fenton degradation performance. The 20% CuBi2O4/rGH composite exhibited 1.4 and 1.3 times higher adsorption and catalytic degradation performance for phenol compared to CuBi2O4, respectively. The removal efficiency of phenol in the adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic system reached 80% within 20 minutes. The cross-linked network structure of the 3D graphene hydrogel allowed for better recycling and showed great potential for practical applications. Quenching and EPR experiments indicated that hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) were the most active species in the synergistic degradation process, and a mechanism for the adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton degradation of CuBi2O4/rGH was proposed.

Porous spherical Cu2O supported by wood-based biochar skeleton for the adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, p-type semiconductor Cu2O nanoparticles supported by wood-based biochar (MBC@Cu2O) were prepared for the treatment of dye-containing wastewater. MBC@Cu2O efficiently degraded methyl orange (MO) dye through an adsorption-photocatalytic mechanism, benefiting from the synergistic effects of the wood-based biochar skeleton and Cu2O. The comprehensive results indicate that MBC@Cu2O has great potential as a bifunctional adsorption-based photocatalytic composite for removing anionic azo dyes from wastewater.

Insights into Cu2O morphology, facet etching, and its hybridized carbonaceous construction for photocatalytic antibiotic pollutant removal

Atul Verma et al.

Summary: Optimization of Cu2O morphology using NH4OH has rarely been explored. In this study, the influence of NH4OH on Cu2O morphology was investigated, and the spherical shape was transformed into octahedron-like octaspheres. The {100} facets at the corners of the Cu2O octaspheres could be etched. The morphology variations and facet etchings were studied using FESEM images and XRD analysis, showing a peak shift in Cu2O (111). Cu2O was then hybridized with rGO and g-C3N4 to form a ternary hybrid CGR, which effectively degraded the antibiotic pollutant tetracycline.

Bismuth oxychloride microcrystals decorated carbon foams based on waste polyurethane elastomer for enhanced removal of methylene blue

Mahitha Udayakumar et al.

Summary: Multicomponent nanocomposites of bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) with porous carbon foam (CF) derived from waste polyurethane (PU) elastomers were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and their photocatalytic performance was investigated. The composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV-A irradiation, with a high overall removal efficiency of 99.0% in 100 min of irradiation. The enhanced activity of the composites was attributed to the well-connected heterojunction interface, improved hydrophilicity, more reactive sites, and effective separation of photogenerated charges.

A selective Au-ZnO/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst for oxidative coupling of methane to ethane with dioxygen

Shuang Song et al.

Summary: The study presents a highly efficient and selective photo-oxidation method for the direct conversion of methane to ethane using a Au nanoparticle (NP) loaded ZnO/TiO2 hybrid. This method achieves an ethane production rate of over 5,000 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with 90% selectivity, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than current state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the formation of heterojunctions between ZnO and TiO2, while the Au cocatalyst facilitates C2H6 formation and inhibits overoxidation of CH4 to CO2.
