To develop a platinum group metal (PGM)-free automotive three-way catalyst (TWC), we investigated the structure-activity relationship for Fe-Ni oxide catalysts and found NiFe2O4 with a spinel structure is an active component of the three-way catalytic reaction (NO-C3H6-CO-O-2). The NiFe2O4 catalyst exhibited a light-off temperature below 300 degrees C for NO reduction, which was more than 50 degrees C lower than previously reported PGM-free TWCs at a high space velocity (GHSV = 140000 h(-1)).
