Mixed-mode high-performance liquid chromatography (MHPLC) is a type of chromatographic technique with extraordinary separation properties, such as adjustable selectivity, high resolution and high sample loading capacity. As the name suggests, MHPLC utilizes more than one forms of interactions between the stationary phases and the solutes for multi-mode chromatographic retention mechanisms, and thus one MHPLC column may replace two or more traditional single mode columns. The physiochemical properties of mixed-mode stationary phase materials are the foundation of the development of MHPLC. The current review describes recent advances in materials for stationary phases of MHPLC. Furthermore, the related aspects of MHPLC materials such as preparation, characterization and application are also summarized. Future outlooks in this rapidly developing field are also discussed.
