We humans have never been simply passive listeners to the sounds around us. Indeed, we have invented ways to modify and manipulate our environment to generate and receive acoustic signals for specific purposes. Acoustic applications are wide ranging enough to encompass language and other forms of communication, the detection of danger, nondestructive evaluation of precision components, and the creation and appreciation of music.
