Properties of strontium-containing BG 58S produced by alkali-mediated sol-gel process

I. R. Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study focused on the application of bioactive glass 58S in bone graft. The choice of precursors has an impact on the physical and biological properties of the glass. The addition of phosphoric acid and concentrated ammonia can improve the performance of bioactive glasses. Using phosphoric acid as a phosphorus precursor can result in amorphous bioactive glass compositions.

Summary: Microspheres and microsphere-based scaffolds have shown great potential in translational medicine. This review summarizes the various fabrication methods for microspheres, discusses the limitations of existing techniques, and describes the appropriate materials and surface-modification strategies to enhance the biological properties of microspheres. The key application of microsphere-functionalized scaffolds for bone tissue engineering is also discussed.
