Tara Gum Coating with Embedded ZnO Nanostructures for Increased Postharvest Guava Shelf Life

Kelly Christine Barbosa Costa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential use of ZnO nanostructures and tara gum coating to prolong the shelf life of guava fruit. The results show that ZnO nanostructures exhibit antimicrobial activity and maintain the visual and quality stability of guava for 16 days post-harvest. This research provides a potential packaging solution for the postharvest preservation of guava fruit.

Biopolymer based edible coating for enhancing the shelf life of horticulture products

Dravin Pratap Singh et al.

Summary: According to the report of the United Nations, half of the fruits and vegetables are lost annually. Coatings, particularly edible films made from natural polymers, are being used to reduce postharvest loss and extend the shelf life of food. However, the cost of these films is high, making them inaccessible to local fruit and vegetable vendors.

Effect of cellulose and starch fatty acid esters addition on microstructure and physical properties of arabinoxylan films

Swati Kanwar et al.

Summary: Arabinoxylan and cellulose were extracted from wheat straw, while starch was extracted from potato peel. Esterification with fatty acids led to loss of crystallinity in cellulose and starch, affecting their properties in film formation. Films with laminar structures showed better water vapor barrier properties but reduced mechanical strength. Thermal stability of the films was enhanced by esterification.

Preharvest Application of Hexanal as a Surface Treatment Improved the Storage Life and Quality of Mango Fruits

Palpandian Preethi et al.

Summary: Pre-harvest application of hexanal formulation on mangoes significantly slows down weight loss and reduces ethylene evolution rate, improving storage life and fruit quality attributes. Post-harvest cold storage combined with hexanal spray further enhances the total soluble solids, total sugars, ascorbic acid and carotenoid content.

Effects of hydroxyethyl cellulose and sodium alginate edible coating containing asparagus waste extract on postharvest quality of strawberry fruit

Changhong Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that edible coatings incorporating asparagus waste extract could effectively maintain the quality of strawberry fruits by delaying color change, reducing weight loss, and preserving total phenolic and flavonoid contents. This approach showed promising anti-fungal activity against Penicillium italicum, while also displaying a continuous, smooth and porous structure under microscopic analysis. The application of these coatings may provide an environmentally friendly solution to extend the shelf life of strawberries.
