Early warning of MIB episode based on gene abundance and expression in drinking water reservoirs

Tengxin Cao et al.

Summary: Cellular 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) yield in cyanobacteria varies under different conditions, making MIB prediction ineffective. Through a field survey, we found that mic gene abundance and expression could serve as indicators for early warning of MIB production. Light intensity was identified as the key regulator for mic gene expression and MIB synthesis. We developed a model using mic gene abundance as an indicator for MIB prediction, which was verified in other reservoirs.

Evaluating the relative adsorption and biodegradation of 2-methylisobor-neol and geosmin across granular activated carbon filter-adsorbers

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contributions of adsorption and biodegradation to the removal of MIB and geosmin in GAC harvested from drinking water treatment plants in the Great Lakes region. It was found that GAC had significant adsorption and biodegradation capacity, and C-14-glucose respiration rate was identified as a potential indicator for GAC biodegradative capacity. Non-targeted screening analysis also identified potential biodegradation products. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for better understanding the use of GAC in water treatment.

Roles of graphitization degree and surface functional groups of N-doped activated biochar for phenol adsorption

Wenran Gao et al.

Summary: The degree of graphitization and surface functional groups play crucial roles in the adsorption of phenol by N-doped activated biochar. Increasing the doping ratio reduces the adsorption capacity of phenol due to the decrease in surface oxygen content and graphitization degree. Different surface functional groups have varying degrees of beneficial effects on the adsorption of phenol, with N-5-pyrrolic and N-Q groups being the most important.

Enhancing the Adsorption Performance of 2-Methylisoborneol by Activated Carbon by Promoting Hydrophobic Effects

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel approach for regulating the hydrophobicity of activated carbon surface by rearranging carbon atoms through thermal transformation. The transformed hydrophobic porous carbons (HPCs) showed increased adsorption capacity and faster adsorption rates for removing odorants. This method provides a new angle for improving the surface hydrophobicity of activated carbon and may lead to the development of high-performance adsorbents.

Current knowledge in the field of algal organic matter adsorption onto activated carbon in drinking water treatment

Martin Pivokonsky et al.

Summary: The paper highlights the increasing occurrences of algal and cyanobacterial blooms globally, and their impact on water sources and treatment processes. It summarizes current research on the adsorption of algal organic matter (AOM) onto activated carbon (AC) in drinking water treatment, focusing on the types of AOM compounds removed, adsorption mechanisms, and influencing factors. The review also addresses the principles of competitive adsorption with other organic pollutants and suggests combining AC adsorption with other treatment techniques to enhance AOM removal.
