Simultaneous degradation and separation of antibiotics in sewage effluent by photocatalytic nanofiltration membrane in a continuous dynamic process

Yuefei Song et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of a novel metal-free and visible light-responsive surface-anchored photocatalytic nanofiltration (PNF) membrane for simultaneous removal of target antibiotics in real sewage effluent. The results showed that the optimal PNF-4 membrane had a tight sub-nanopore structured separation layer and a super hydrophilic mesoporous degradation layer. The activated PNF-4 membrane effectively reduced antibiotic concentrations and displayed good self-cleaning performance.

Simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals from aqueous phase via adsorptive strategy: A critical review

Mudi Zhai et al.

Summary: The coexistence of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals poses a serious threat to aquatic environments. Adsorbents have been widely used for the simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals and metals from water. The effectiveness of the adsorption process depends on various factors such as the characteristics of the adsorbents and contaminants, temperature, pH, inorganic ions, and natural organic matter. Bridging and competition effects play significant roles in promoting or inhibiting the adsorption process. This review provides valuable insights into the theoretical knowledge in this field and may contribute to the prevention and control of the coexistence of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals in wastewater.

Design and optimization of a novel Y-Fe-GO magnetic adsorbent for simultaneous removal of tetracycline and arsenic and adsorption mechanisms

Jinsong He et al.

Summary: This study designed and prepared a novel magnetic Y-Fe modified GO adsorbent (YMGO) for the simultaneous and effective removal of tetracycline (TC) and arsenic (As). The adsorbents were optimized, and the YMGO-2 showed higher adsorption performance compared to other reported adsorbents. The presence of TC or As(V) negatively affected the adsorption of As(V) or TC in the composite system. The study also revealed the mechanisms of TC and As(V) adsorption, involving hydrogen bond, pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA), n-pi, cation bonding bridge interactions, and ion-exchange between As(V) and Y/Fe-OH groups.

The Oxidation and Immobilization of As(III) by Colloidal Ferric Hydroxide in the Concomitant Pollution of Oxytetracycline

Yunping Tong et al.

Summary: The concomitant pollution of arsenic and antibiotics has been commonly observed in recent environments, and their behavior may differ from when they exist individually. Colloidal ferric hydroxide (CFH) is found ubiquitously in various environments and in this study, it was shown to facilitate the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) and the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Under oxygen-rich conditions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as (OH)-O• and O2•- were generated through the reactions between dissolved oxygen (DO) and Fe(II). It was found that (OH)-O• played a dominant role in the oxidation of As(III). Furthermore, the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) resulted in the formation of ferric arsenate, which significantly reduced the risks of As(III) in the environment. Similar transformations were also observed with other iron oxides and different antibiotics. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of organic pollutants in combined contamination.

Enhanced Removal of Polyfluoroalkyl Substances by Simple Modified Biochar: Adsorption Performance and Theoretical Calculation

Yinjie Zhang et al.

Summary: To address PFAS pollution in the global aquatic environment, a study developed an acid-modified biochar adsorbent derived from sludge, which exhibited satisfactory performance. The study also determined the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for PFOS and PFOA, and investigated the adsorption mechanism using a combination of theoretical calculations and experimental results. The findings provide valuable insights into the adsorption of PFAS on modified biochar as an environmentally friendly adsorbent, with potential applications in resource reuse, water quality improvement, and safeguarding human health.

Fast Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solution by Aluminosilicate Zeolite Nanoparticles with High Adsorption Capacity

Sara Al-Salihi et al.

Summary: Aluminosilicate zeolite nanoparticles were synthesized and used as adsorbents for tetracycline (TC) removal from aqueous solutions. The zeolite nanoparticles showed high adsorption efficiency for TC with a fast kinetics and a maximum adsorption capacity of 454.55 mg g-1 at pH 6.7. The adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and exothermic, attributed to hydrogen bonding and surface complex formation. This study provides a new way to synthesize efficient and recyclable aluminosilicate zeolite nanoparticles as adsorbents for TC removal from contaminated water.

Interactions between antibiotics and heavy metals determine their combined toxicity to Synechocystis sp.

Xiuqi You et al.

Summary: The joint toxicity of antibiotics and metals towards aquatic organisms is dependent on their interactions, with complexation leading to antagonistic effects and lack of interactions resulting in additive effects. CTC facilitated the intracellular uptake of metals by increasing membrane permeability, while FLO had no significant effects on metal internalization. Proteomic analysis revealed down-regulation of photosynthetic proteins by CTC and FLO and showed that Cu(II) and Cd(II) induced different responses in protein regulation. Co-exposure of antibiotics and metals alleviated or exacerbated dysregulation of biological functions in Synechocystis sp., suggesting their combined toxicity effects.

Summary: In this study, sodium thiosulfate was used as an additive in molten salt to produce S enriched biochar for heavy metal adsorption. The results showed that the S enriched biochar had a higher adsorption capacity compared to other biochars. Mechanism analysis revealed that the enhanced adsorption performance was mainly due to the chemical and physical adsorption effects.
