Comparative analysis of root anatomical structure, chemical components and differentially expressed genes between early bolting and unbolting in Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn

Jing Xie et al.

Summary: Early bolting of Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn significantly affects its quality. The root structure and coumarins content of the early bolting (CT) and unbolting (WT) plants were compared. It was found that the proportion of area outside the root cambium and the content of all four coumarins were higher in the unbolting plants. Additionally, differentially expressed genes related to photoperiod, gibberellin pathways, and coumarins biosynthesis were identified. Further studies are needed to confirm the mechanism behind the effect of early bolting on the quality formation of P. praeruptorum.

Bolting reduces ferulic acid and flavonoid biosynthesis and induces root lignification in Angelica sinensis

Meiling Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the root biomass, accumulations of ferulic acid, flavonoids, and lignin, antioxidant capacity, and related gene expression during four different bolting stages in Angelica sinensis. The results showed a decrease in root biomass, ferulic acid, and flavonoids, while an increase in lignin content during the bolting stages. Antioxidant capacity also decreased with growth and development. The differential expression of genes involved in the biosynthesis of ferulic acid, flavonoids, and lignin correlated with changes in metabolite accumulation. These findings provide useful references for improving the production of bioactive metabolites in A. sinensis.

The role of alternative splicing in adaptation and evolution

Jukka-Pekka Verta et al.

Summary: Regulation of gene expression is crucial in evolutionary processes, and alternative splicing has an important but unexplored role in adaptation. Recent studies have shown the independent evolution of alternative splicing and transcript levels, providing diverse paths for selection.

Parallel evolution of UbiA superfamily proteins into aromatic O-prenyltransferases in plants

Ryosuke Munakata et al.

Summary: Plants produce around 300 aromatic compounds enzymatically linked to prenyl side chains via C-O bonds, some of which can impact human health. The discovery of aromatic O-PT genes in plants like grapefruit and Angelica keiskei sheds light on the evolution of plant secondary metabolites. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that aromatic O-prenylation activity evolved independently from the same ancestral gene in distant plant taxa.

De novo Transcriptome Sequencing Coupled With Co-expression Analysis Reveal the Transcriptional Regulation of Key Genes Involved in the Formation of Active Ingredients in Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn Under Bolting Period

Cheng Song et al.

Summary: This study employed transcriptome sequencing and coexpression analysis to investigate the regulation mechanism of key genes related to coumarin synthesis in Peucedanum praeruptorum during pre- and postbolting period, exploring the effects of bolting on the formation and transport of coumarins. Differential expression analysis identified upregulated and downregulated genes related to the phenylpropanoid pathway, with important genes related to bolting process revealed through WGCNA-based coexpression analysis. Key genes involved in phenylpropanoid pathway, ABC transporters, apoptosis-related and circadian rhythm regulatory genes were suggested to play crucial roles in regulating bolting signaling, biosynthesis, and transportation of coumarins.
