Novel Fe/N co-doping biochar based electro-Fenton catalytic membrane enabling enhanced tetracycline removal and self-cleaning performance

Zhonglong Yin et al.

Summary: Designing a highly-active electro-Fenton (EF) catalytic membrane without additional chemicals and iron sludge formation for antibiotics treatment is challenging. In this study, Fe/N co-doping biochar (Fe-g-C3N4/biochar) based ultrafiltration membranes were constructed to degrade tetracycline and control membrane fouling under electro-assistance. The membranes showed high electro-Fenton catalytic activity due to the presence of oxygen functional groups and nitrogen species that promoted H2O2 generation and accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle. Furthermore, H3PO4 activation of biochar and lower pyrolysis temperature enhanced the electrocatalytic activity of the EF catalytic membrane.

The membrane, with a pore size that excludes natural organic matter, selectively exposed smaller organics to hydroxyl radicals, effectively inhibiting the degradation of organic pollutants.

Emerging graphitic carbon nitride-based membranes for water purification

Yuqi Cui et al.

Summary: Membrane separation is a promising technology for removing water contaminants with low energy consumption and small carbon footprint. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a promising membrane material due to its unique structure and catalytic activity. The integration of physical separation, catalysis, and energy conversion during water purification using g-C3N4-based membranes is essential for sustainability. Challenges and future research directions for g-C3N4-based membranes were also discussed in the review.

Electro-catalytic membrane reactors for the degradation of organic pollutants - a review

Priyanka Kumari et al.

Summary: The treatment of persistent organic pollutants in wastewater is a global challenge, as traditional wastewater treatment systems are ineffective in dealing with these pollutants. Emerging technologies, such as electrochemical advanced oxidation processes and electro-catalytic membrane reactors (ECMRs), are applied for the degradation and filtration of organic pollutants. This research focuses on discussing the preparation methods of anodic membranes and their catalytic performance on organic degradation, emphasizing the impact of physicochemical characteristics on the efficiency of the process.
