Climate change effects on vulnerable populations in the Global South: a systematic review

Bethuel Sibongiseni Ngcamu

Summary: The climate and environmental changes in the Global South have devastating effects on vulnerable populations, which have been perpetuated by socio-economic and political as well as gender inequalities and non-existent interventions to adapt and mitigate its adverse effects. The literature review confirms that climate change impacts vulnerable populations adversely, with ineffective adaptability mechanisms and discrimination against these groups in societal programs and interventions. This exacerbates the destruction of their livelihoods and highlights the gaps in current research regarding interventions for sexual gender-based violence victims and the effectiveness of adaptation and mitigation mechanisms.

Analysing diurnal temperature range and extreme temperature events over Delhi and Mumbai mega cities

Ahmed Ali Shahfahad et al.

Summary: Among the various effects of urbanization on climate change, the changing thermal environment is the most extensively studied and understood phenomenon. Impervious surfaces in cities absorb and re-emit more heat from solar radiation compared to natural landscapes, leading to elevated temperatures in global cities. Due to increased impervious surfaces and anthropogenic emissions, the diurnal temperature range is decreasing in cities while the frequency of extreme temperature events is increasing.

Extreme climate change hazards and impacts on European coastal cities: A review

Emilio Laino et al.

Summary: This review paper examines the impacts of climate change on ten European coastal cities through a participatory process involving the cities and the review of existing literature. By combining scientific literature analysis with insights from local experts, it provides a comprehensive overview of the current situation of these diverse cities in relation to multiple climate-related hazards, which can be extrapolated to other cities.

Intensification of sub-daily rainfall extremes in a low-rise urban area

Jamie Huang et al.

Summary: Short-duration extreme rainfall events are the main cause of flash and pluvial floods in cities. This study examined the impact of urbanization on sub-daily extreme rainfall intensities in Phoenix, Arizona. The results showed that the intensification trend of extreme rainfall intensities was significantly larger in the urbanized area compared to rural areas. The study also found that urbanization influenced air temperature but not humidity. These findings are important for urban planning and climate change research.

Unraveling the complexity of human behavior and urbanization on community vulnerability to floods

Mona Hemmati et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of human behavior in urbanization and flood-prone area development, emphasizing the need to consider human factors when formulating flood risk reduction policies. When people are informed about flood risk and provided with proper incentives, they are more likely to avoid flood-prone areas. Neighborhood quality has the most significant impact on people's location decisions.

A Global Analysis of the Relationship Between Urbanization and Fatalities in Earthquake-Prone Areas

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in global earthquake-prone areas, population size is positively correlated with earthquake fatalities, while urban land area is negatively correlated. Areas with low urbanization ratios tend to have higher earthquake fatalities, but a decrease is seen after the ratio reaches 40% to 50%. Countries with higher urbanization ratios show greater resistance in building and infrastructure against earthquakes.

Principal component analysis for geographical data: the role of spatial effects in the definition of composite indicators

Alfredo Cartone et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of spatial dependence, spatial heterogeneity, and spatial scale in principal component analysis for geographically distributed data. By utilizing geographically weighted principal component analysis and spatial filtering, it reveals composite indicators of socio-economic deprivation in the Italian province of Rome at different spatial scales, providing valuable insights for enhancing local policies.
