Risk Factors and Prediction of the Probability of Wildfire Occurrence in the China-Mongolia-Russia Cross-Border Area

Yuheng Li et al.

Summary: Wildfire plays a crucial role in altering land ecosystems' structures, processes, and functions. Understanding the potential drivers of wildfires and predicting their occurrence is vital in the China-Mongolia-Russia cross-border area. This study used the Random Forest (RF) model to assess factors affecting wildfire and the Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to simulate and predict wildfire occurrence. The PSO-ANFIS model showed high classification accuracy and can be used to predict the probability of wildfire occurrence.

Impact of armed conflict on land use and land cover changes in global border areas

Fangyu Zheng et al.

Summary: This study examines the linkages between armed conflicts and land use and land cover changes (LUCC) in borderlands. The findings show that nearly 50% of global armed conflicts since 1992 have occurred in borderlands, resulting in approximately 16.5% of global LUCC. The impact of armed conflicts on land use is delayed, with most changes occurring during the conflict period, and the rate of impervious surface changes is higher.

Diversified land conversion deepens understanding of impacts of rapid rubber plantation expansion on plant diversity in the tropics

Bangqian Chen et al.

Summary: Understanding plant diversity in rubber plantations is crucial for sustainable management, but knowledge at a continental scale is limited. This study analyzed plant diversity in 240 rubber plantations in the Great Mekong Subregion and found that the average species richness is about half of tropical forests and double that of croplands. The establishment of rubber plantations mainly replaced croplands, old rubber plantations, and tropical forests, and species richness was highest in the latter. The maintenance of high species richness and the reduction of invasive species with stand age are important for biodiversity conservation in rubber plantations.

Monitoring ecological and environmental stress patterns over the past two decades in the Mekong River basin

Yubin Li et al.

Summary: The Mekong River Basin has experienced extensive socio-economic development in recent decades, resulting in forest loss across the region. Cambodia faced the most significant forest loss, while Thailand and Myanmar saw net forest gain. Trends in net primary productivity and surface temperature varied starkly from north to south in the region, with a clear negative correlation between tree density decrease and surface temperature increase in degraded forest regions.

Impervious surface expansion in the China-Laos border area under the context of geo-economic cooperation: a case study of the Mohan-Boten Economic Cooperation Zone

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the patterns and characteristics of impervious surface expansion in the China-Laos Mohan-Boten Economic Cooperation Zone (ECZ) and evaluates its response to geo-economic cooperation. The results show that the ECZ and the China-Laos Railway are significant contributors to impervious surface expansion on both sides of the border. The ISA in the ECZ doubled in just five years.

Study on Spatio-Temporal Changes of Land Use Sustainability in Southwestern Border Mountainous Provinces in Recent 20 Years Based on Remote Sensing Interpretation: A Case Study in Yunnan Province, China

Renyi Yang et al.

Summary: The characteristics of mountain areas include a fragile innate ecological environment, severe damage and degradation of the acquired ecological environment, relatively backward economy and society, and low degree of sustainable development. The lack of land use sustainability evaluation research based on RS and GIS in mountainous provinces is a pressing issue. This study proposes an integrated approach combining RS and GIS with multi-phase LUCC and LUSE theory to assess the overall sustainability of land use in Yunnan province. The findings show an improvement in overall sustainability, but regional differences and deficiencies still exist.

Temporal and Spatial Evolution Characteristics and Its Driving Mechanism of Land Use/Land Cover Change in Laos from 2000 to 2020

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover change is crucial for land conservation and sustainable development in Laos. This study utilized various methods to analyze the spatiotemporal regularity and driving mechanism of LUCC in Laos from 2000 to 2020, and found that population is a key factor driving LUCC in the country.

Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Land-Use Changes and Conflicts between Cropland and Forest in the Mekong River Basin during 1990-2020

Jiahao Zhai et al.

Summary: This study investigates land-use and land-cover changes (LULCCs) in the Mekong River Basin (MRB) and reveals that forest loss and cropland expansion are the dominant features since 1990, with noticeable differences among sub-basins. The conflict between cropland and forest is the most significant LULCC, accounting for the majority of the MRB area.

Forest gains and losses in Southeast Asia over 27 years: The slow convergence towards reforestation

Emmanuel Paradis

Summary: This study analyzed forest cover changes in eleven countries in Southeast Asia, finding significant variations among countries and a certain correlation between forest cover changes and national socioeconomic conditions. Some countries showed an increasing trend in forest cover, while others experienced declines. The study suggests that the future changes in forest cover in Southeast Asia will be influenced by countries with significant agroforestry sectors.

Integrating Pixels, People, and Political Economy to Understand the Role of Armed Conflict and Geopolitics in Driving Deforestation: The Case of Myanmar

Kevin M. Woods et al.

Summary: The study found that factors influencing deforestation include armed conflict, geopolitics, national political economic reforms and timber regulations, and proximity to national borders and their respective geopolitical relations. There are three common periods of deforestation spikes in northern and southern Myanmar, but significant differences exist between regions as well as within townships and village tracts.

Impact of the Kunming-Bangkok Highway on Land Use Changes along the Route between Laos and Thailand

Fangyu Zheng et al.

Summary: The study found that the further away from the highway, the smaller the overall changes in land use within the buffer zone. A comparison before and after the road was opened in 2013 showed significant changes in influential land use types, with forests being converted to plantations and agriculture. This research can provide a scientific basis for regional transportation planning and sustainable land resource management.

The social and ecological costs of reforestation. Territorialization and industrialization of land use accompany forest transitions in Southeast Asia

Melanie Pichler et al.

Summary: Five Southeast Asian countries have shifted from net deforestation to net increases in forest area since the 1990s, driven by climate change mitigation policies like REDD+. However, this has led to exclusionary effects and spatial injustices. The study highlights the complexities in forest transitions and how they compromise the benefits for climate change mitigation.
