Fast Dynamic Synthesis of MIL-68(In) Thin Films in High Optical Quality for Optical Cavity Sensing

Bahram Hosseini Monjezi et al.

Summary: The fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films is essential for integrating these materials into electronic and optical devices. However, the limited structural variety of MOF thin films prepared through layer-by-layer deposition has been a challenge. In this study, a fast method for the preparation of MIL SURMOF on Au-surfaces was developed, allowing for the deposition of adjustable thickness thin films within 60 minutes. The resulting MIL-68(In) thin films showed high optical quality and mechanical properties, making them suitable for use as optical read-out sensors.

In situ micropillar compression of an anisotropic metal-organic framework single crystal

Zhixin Zeng et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanical behavior of MOF beyond their elastic limit is crucial for their practical applications. The study determined the stress-strain curves of a copper paddlewheel MOF (HKUST-1) along different crystallographic directions and revealed anisotropic elastic response and extensive plastic flows. The fracture toughness values of two facets were comparable, indicating the ductility of porous framework under compression and bonds breakage.

Mechanical properties and nanostructure of monolithic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: a nanoindentation, nanospectroscopy, and finite element study

Michele Tricarico et al.

Summary: Studying the mechanical behavior and structural changes of MOF monoliths is crucial for their practical applications. In this study, two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-71) were investigated using nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques. The results provide insights into the deformation mechanisms and structural alterations of monolithic ZIF materials, which are important for understanding their mechanical properties and optimizing their performance.

Sol-gel processing of a covalent organic framework for the generation of hierarchically porous monolithic adsorbents

Mark E. Carrington et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for shaping and densifying COFs into robust porous structures without the need for templates, additives, or binders. The process minimizes mechanical damage and provides an interparticle mesoporous network that allows for higher analyte capacities than the intrinsic COF structure. The study accurately captures the monolithic structure and correlates pore architecture with performance in gas storage and separation applications.

Plasticity of Metal-Organic Framework Glasses

Remo N. Widmer et al.

Summary: Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses exhibit significant plasticity in uniaxial micropillar compression experiments. The yield strength of the material evolves with increasing strain rate, with structural densification identified as the predominant mechanism for accommodating plasticity in these glasses.

25 Years of Reticular Chemistry

Ralph Freund et al.

Summary: The core of reticular chemistry has brought precision and expertise of organic and inorganic synthesis to the solid state. The most profound scientific innovation of this field has been the design strategies for the synthesis of extended crystalline solids through strong directional bonds, highlighting the different classes of reticular materials developed and how complexity can be introduced into their backbones. Structural control over these materials is being extended from the molecular scale to their crystal morphology and shape on the nanoscale, all the way to their shaping on the bulk scale.
