Zn doped iron oxide nanoparticles with high magnetization and photothermal efficiency for cancer treatment

Georgios Kasparis et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of zinc doping on the magnetic properties and structural characteristics of iron oxide nanoparticles. The results showed that zinc doping improved the magnetic properties and reduced the lattice strain of the nanoparticles. The zinc ferrite nanoparticles had long-term magnetic and colloidal stability and showed similar biocompatibility to iron oxide nanoparticles. Compared to magnetothermal therapy, semiconductor photo-hyperthermia using zinc ferrite nanoparticles achieved higher efficiency and faster temperature increase.

A Universal Synthesis Strategy for Tunable Metal-Organic Framework Nanohybrids

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: We demonstrate a versatile synthesis strategy to combine metal-organic frameworks with nanoparticles, allowing for the formation of mono-, bi-, tri-, and quaternary composites. This method does not require specific surface structures or functionalities on the pre-formed cores. The controlled diffusion rate of alkaline vapors regulates the growth of MOFs and encapsulation of NPs.

Photothermia at the nanoscale induces ferroptosis via nanoparticle degradation

Alexandre Fromain et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that photothermia at the nanoscale can trigger the degradation of magnetic nanoparticles, leading to the release of Fe(II) and enabling photothermo-ferroptotic therapy. The temperature acts as an accelerator for nanoparticle degradation and can be remotely triggered by laser-mediated photothermal conversion. The efficacy of this treatment method has been confirmed in in vitro experiments.

Structure-Property-Function Relationships of Iron Oxide Multicore Nanoflowers in Magnetic Hyperthermia and Photothermia

Enzo Bertuit et al.

Summary: Magnetite and maghemite multicore nanoflowers synthesized using modified polyol-mediated routes are highly effective nanoheaters in magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) and have also shown promising performances in photothermal therapy (PT) in the NIR-II biological window. The study investigates the influence of synthesis parameters on the size, shape, composition, cores, and crystallinity of the nanoflowers, establishing correlations between their structure, properties, and function in MHT and PT. Iron(III) and heating ramps are found to play a critical role in the formation of well-defined nanoflowers with multiple cores, with optical responses and photothermal properties depending on volume and structural disorder rather than stoichiometry. Defect concentration in the nanostructures affects optical behavior, with a transition in photothermal efficiency observed at a critical Urbach energy value.

Remotely controlled near-infrared-triggered photothermal treatment of brain tumours in freely behaving mice using gold nanostars

Hamed Arami et al.

Summary: In this study, a wireless near-infrared stimulation-based photothermal approach for the continuous and on-demand treatment of brain tumours in freely moving animals is presented. The method avoids the risks and side-effects associated with open-skull tumour resection and chemotherapy or X-ray radiation. It utilizes an integrated nanomedicine-bioelectronics brain-machine interface, allowing precise treatment of deep brain tumours and selective diffusion of treatment in tumour tissues.

In Situ/Operando Electrocatalyst Characterization by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Janis Timoshenko et al.

Summary: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a crucial method for investigating the structure and composition of heterogeneous catalysts, revealing the nature of active sites and establishing links between structural motifs, local electronic structure, and catalytic properties. Recent advancements in instrumentation and data analysis approaches for deciphering X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra have been discussed, with emphasis on applications in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, particularly in electrocatalysis.

Biocompatibility of Platinum Nanoparticles in Brain ex vivo Models in Physiological and Pathological Conditions

Maurizio Gulino et al.

Summary: Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) have diverse applications in medicine, including drug delivery and surface coating on biomedical devices. Studies show that PtNPs have limited impact on cell viability in normal conditions and do not exacerbate tissue responses under neuropathological induced scenarios. However, PtNPs can cause microglial cell activation and morphological alterations in certain brain regions. Further research is needed to ensure the safe use of PtNPs and develop more biocompatible nanoparticles for brain applications.
