Serum interleukin-6 levels predict kidney disease progression in diabetic nephropathy

Beatriz Sanchez-Alamo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between IL-6 levels and progression of DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, demonstrating that IL-6 is independently associated with an increased risk for DKD progression. The results indicated that patients with higher IL-6 levels were more likely to reach the primary endpoint, and treatment with RAS blockade did not influence IL-6 levels.

Gut Microbiota and Complications of Type-2 Diabetes

Camelia Oana Iatcu et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the development of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Modulating the gut microbiota through probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbial transplantation shows potential in treating diabetes and its complications. The severity of gut microbiota dysbiosis is associated with disease severity, and restoration of the gut microbiota through probiotic administration can improve symptoms and disease progression.

Moutan Cortex polysaccharide ameliorates diabetic kidney disease via modulating gut microbiota dynamically in rats

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that polysaccharides from traditional Chinese medicine, such as Moutan Cortex polysaccharide (MC-Pa), positively affect diabetic kidney disease (DKD) by modulating gut microbiota. MC-Pa administration alleviates hyperglycemia and renal injury, improves intestinal barrier function, reduces proinflammatory mediators, and increases short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents in DKD rats. The modulation of gut microbiota by MC-Pa is dose- and time-dependent, and specific gut microbiota phyla and genera are significantly associated with DKD-related indicators.

Chitosan oligosaccharide mitigates kidney injury in prediabetic rats by improving intestinal barrier and renal autophagy

Prempree Sutthasupha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) on preventing obesity-related complications and providing renoprotection in a prediabetic model. The results showed that COS successfully improved obesity, glucose intolerance, and kidney dysfunction by attenuating intestinal lipid absorption and the inflammation-autophagy-apoptosis axis.

The extract of Polygala fallax Hemsl. slows the progression of diabetic nephropathy by targeting TLR4 anti-inflammation and MMP-2/9-mediated anti-fibrosis in vitro

Minhui Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of Polygala fallax extract (EPF) on high glucose-induced human glomerular mesangial cell (HMC) injury, inflammation, fibrosis, and apoptosis. The results showed that EPF could reverse the hyperproliferation and apoptosis of HMCs induced by high glucose, inhibit the increase in inflammatory factors, and downregulate the expression of TLR4/NF-xB pathway and its downstream factors.

Changes of gut microbiota in diabetic nephropathy and its effect on the progression of kidney injury

Kedan Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gut microbiota and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels in diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients and explored the mechanism of sodium butyrate in diabetic mellitus (DM) rats. The results showed dysbiosis of gut microbiota and decreased SCFA-producing bacteria in DN patients. Sodium butyrate supplementation increased SCFA levels and improved kidney injury in DM rats. It was suggested that sodium butyrate might increase autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR pathway.

Intestinal microbiota and diabetic kidney diseases: the Role of microbiota and derived metabolites inmodulation of renal inflammation and disease progression

C. M. Mosterd et al.

Summary: Diabetic kidney disease is a growing burden on public health and the leading cause of end-stage kidney diseases. Interactions between host-gut microbiota have emerged as essential for maintaining host homeostasis, particularly evident in the bidirectional microbiota-kidney crosstalk during progressive kidney dysfunction, leading to a vicious cycle of dysbiosis and renal dysfunction.

QiDiTangShen granules modulated the gut microbiome composition and improved bile acid profiles in a mouse model of diabetic nephropathy

Huili Wei et al.

Summary: QiDiTangShen granules (QDTS) have been shown to significantly alleviate renal injuries in mice with diabetic nephropathy (DN), reducing urinary albumin excretion and attenuating pathological kidney damage. QDTS altered gut microbiota composition and decreased serum levels of bile acids associated with the activation of farnesoid X receptor (FXR). However, the specific mechanism for QDTS reno-protection in DN remains to be further studied.

Effect of gut microbiota on LPS-induced acute lung injury by regulating the TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathway

Jia Tang et al.

Summary: The study explores the regulatory mechanism of gut flora in the host defense against LPS-induced ALI through the TLR4/NF-kB pathway. It is found that gut microbiota imbalance may regulate the TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathway in the lung immune system, activating oxidative stress in the lung and mediating lung injury through the regulation of the gut barrier. Additionally, fecal microbiota transplantation impairs the activity of the TLR4/NF-kB signaling pathway in the lung and decreases oxidative stress in animals with ALI by restoring the gut microecology.

Bee Bread Can Alleviate Lipid Abnormalities and Impaired Bone Morphology in Obese Zucker Diabetic Rats

Monika Martiniakova et al.

Summary: The study found that bee bread could potentially alleviate lipid derangements and reduce bone quality in Zucker diabetic fatty rats, which are a type 2 diabetes animal model. Specifically, higher doses of bee bread showed significant improvements in cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as bone quality indicators such as trabecular bone volume and thickness. This suggests a promising potential of bee bread in ameliorating T2DM-related complications.
