Mickey Howard et al.

Summary: This article presents a place-based systems perspective on the sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and explores the challenges in transitioning towards a circular economy. Using the case of Devon and Cornwall in England, the article argues that SMEs who recognize the role of place-based societal identities and ecosystems become more resilient and intertwine community welfare and labor considerations with geographic-specific natural capital and the circular economy. The article also highlights the tensions and trade-offs in place-based circular systems, emphasizing the dependence on resource circulation.
